Default 81mm bore vs bigger bore (under high boost)

The engine in question is a b18c1.

I am having my engine sleeved and the question is now up in the air of what bore to go with. It costs no extra to go to a higher bore, but I am worried about the stress under high boost.

Are there distinct advantages to running the thicker walls of an 81mm bore, or are the advantages more in the favor of the added displacement from an 82+mm bore?

I asked myself the same question and then thought, well if something goes wrong with an 81mm bore the block can maybe be saved, but if that happens with an 84mm bore the block is most likely toast

if tuned properly, you'll get much more power with bigger bore, which means bigger displacement, spools up earlier.

I would just go with the maximum recomendation from the sleeve company you've taken!!!

go with like a 83mm or 84mm you will be happy in the long run. more displacement will also help out your trq and thats what really makes us hondas move (that and power/weight ratio).

most people choose the 83mm since its a stock sheleved piston the 83mm will leave you room to grow and it works really well.

if you pick the right turbo you will not really spool up faster. it will be about the same since the turbo will need to be bigger so that it doesn't die off in the top end due to more displacement. but if you keep the same turbo, yes it will spool faster.

83mm

you get a little more displacement and you could also resuse the block if something goes wrong.

This seems to be a pretty general consensus. 83mm seems to add enough displacement to make it worth while, but also like mentioned, it still allows for a little more overbore if something happens to the walls.

How hard is it to find some decent forged pistons in an 83mm bore? (CP, Wiseco, etc..)

82-83 if I were to do it all over again.

i know endyne always has 81-83mm in stock for pistons, they sometimes carry 84 and 85mm. any piston company can make you a set of custom bore pistons for about the same price, if they don't make them already

get 83mm, you can reuse the same block over and over, and if you get tired of it, you can sell it to the all motor guys, and it can still be used.

Alot of people seem to be affraid of pressure above 30psi. If you run small displacement run more boost.

I would go with 82-83. Max of the darton sleeves is 85. So with 83 you have a little space and maybe could use the sleeves again or something like that.
At least me and my buddy came to that conclusion.
