60-trim T3 turbo .60/.63 from Thunderbird .. can it produce 350whp ? .. ( Prelude )
Mid 80's manual Thunderbirds came with a 60-trim Garrett T3 turbo with .60 a/r compressor and .63 a/r turbine housings. That TBird was equipped with a 2.3L engine.
Here is my question .. I have a Prelude 2.2L, Vtec. Will this turbocharger meet my goal of 350whp ? I have this turbo in my posession, fully rebuilt, and internal wastegate removed. |

it will but i dont think it will be on pump gas

also to the op 300 is doable... 350 might be a long shot. |

Assume that all other parts that go along with turbo are built for ideal efficiency. Would the turbo shaft design hold me back from the goal ( i.e. OE style exhaust / compressor fins ), or something else ? |

300 seems to be the max in my experience with stock internal vtec engines.

Sounds like you might not have that much experience

check garrett for a compressor map and find out the hp ratting on the turbo

VERY small turbo for a 2.2L engine. really not going to be enjoyable. instant spool and then flat on its face aroun 6500 rpm or less. even if it was a super 60 trim straight t3 it will only produce about 325 and thats going to be on crazy boost levels and out of the effeciency range and need to be done on pump gas.
just do it the right way with a properly sized turbo 50 trim .63 turbine will get you to 350 nicely and be good spool and powerband http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n...bo-ls/Fig4.gif |

what if you dont spend much time above 6500? would this be good for a daily driver? instant spool sounds like it would feel like n/a power to me. i never been turbo. what do you mean "flat on its face?

I had one of those on a built D16. I ported the turbine housing volute(sp?) and opened it up a little around the wheel to make it flow better at high rpms...it was fun on that engine but it would have a pretty lame powerband on something bigger with more rpm too.

Re: 60-trim T3 turbo .60/.63 from Thunderbird .. can it produce 350whp ? .. ( Prelude
fall on its face means the turbine will not flow enough exhaust gas pressure and it will choke the motor out and you will lose power

damn, just spent all this money for a rebuild thinking that this will be the turbo to use, and now you all tell me this. I've seen smaller turbos, like the DSM-Audi-Vw ones, and mine is bigger so I thought it will be fine.

yeah its not big enough , i mean you technically CAN use it. but you will get bored and sick of it real quick and its not worth the trouble of swapping it out

Re: 60-trim T3 turbo .60/.63 from Thunderbird .. can it produce 350whp ? .. ( Prelude
350whp? Probably not. 300whp, yes it will. Personally, I like smaller turbos. In a heavy prelude, 275-300whp at 12-15psi should feel nice for a daily driver. With the Prelude's extra weight, the lower end power should be helpful and not result in tire spinning death for the most case. If 350whp is the number in your head, get a 50 trim t3/t04e and sell the 60 trim T3. If you can live with 275-300whp, the 60 trim should be a solid choice.

again you CAN use it but there are better suited turbos for the application. depending on which b20 you have and the redline cause the earlier b20's have a lower redline of 6500rpm and have weak valve springs this turbo would work decent
