450 hp B-series keeps breaking oil pumps - which crank pulley???
i'm runnin the performance plus $180 crank pulley, its supposed to be harmonic balancer "ctr race spec"
Shattered two oil pumps in the last six months.
Should I switch to the ATI pulley? Or Fluidamper?
Your thoughts?
Thanks

Have you thought about checking the oil pump gear to crankshaft clearance? If your engien has been rebuilt you could have issues with excessive pressure being placed on the pump gears.
A pully will not shatter gears, theres and inharent problem with the engine. Please don't turn this into a ctr pulley's blow motors.

oem or bust!
and yes a pully can cause gears to shatter. most of the aftermarket or ctr pulleys are not balanced well and cause vibration in the crank which causes pump failure...based on experience!

what ever happened to "shaving" the crank pulley?
I know someone use to offer that service many years back but I don't ever hear about it anymore....
Did it work well or not well?

ATI or Fluidampr to the original poster and be done with it.

I shattered 4 oil pumps with a ctr spec pulley strait from honda. I switched to an oem gsr pulley and havent had a problem since and i have witnessed other cars with the same problem on boosted setups, take that pulley off asappppppppp

Based on your thoughts of a crank pulley causing a oil pump to fail. Why is there not endless threads about lightweight flywheels destroying engines/oil pumps? It's the same thing just on the other side of the block, and with WAY more weight swinging around.

Not anywhere near the same. You flywheel just spins round and round. Its soild. Your stock crank pully has rubber in it to help dampin any vibrations. When you have a aftermarket pully that is just some spun alum or whatever it dosent suck up any of the vibrations and sends the vibrations down your crank.

Because you have two things on that side of the crank that you do not on the crank pulley side. You have the clutch to help balance and you have to transfer all that vibration/harmonics through the mains/girdle. With the crank pulley, there is nothing there to support it. All the vibration/harmonics are present and the oil pump takes the beating.

Isn't a lot of oil pump failure due to very harsh clutch engagement also? I remember reading some years back about the "shock" of unsprung clutches causing it also. It was an article talking about S2000 driveline and Tatsuru Ichisima, the owner of Spoon, was going on about S2000 driveline. But yes of coarse an oem or ati is better than a **** chung lightweight pulley. just something else to think about I guess

Is this a stock oil pump? I've seen a few cars over 400hp have stock oil pumps give out. Get a better damper & oil pump then call it a day

Balance your rotating assembly the pulley isn't doing anything wrong the assembly is out of balance. IMO.

Oh sure, just don't self willingly ignore the discrepancies.
Add a light weigh clutch/fly assembly to the opposite of the crank that has less mass so increases pulsations blame it on just the pulley it's very rational .

Its easy to have unwanted harmonics from your clutch assy especially with oem diameter metallic clutch setups.metallic clutch pucks in discs are not balanced and can also cause vibrations as rpm rises.these vibrations will run towards the crank pulley past the oil pump thus, a good damper is a wise investment.

I used to be one of those hardcore "CTR pulleys cant destroy an oil pump" guys. Everyone told me time and time again to yard that thing off, but i loved the fact my motor revved like 600cc bike. Until one day i was pulling on the car hard and.....oh wow, my oil pump shattered and led to the demise of my motor. Since then its been an OEM 2000 Si balancer and havent had a single sign of wear on any of the bearings or oil pump in my built motor. BAN the CTR lol
