Default 350whp built SOHC: build my D16Y8, or a D16Z6?

I am currently (as of last night) running a Precision SC50, ramhorn manifold, 3" DP, etc. etc. on my stock D16Y8 (with ARP headstuds). I plan on building my motor this summer, and I have a spare D16Y8 block that I already bought. However, I was thinking about running a D16Z6 head to avoid the P2P timing issues.

Then I got to thinking: Why overcomplicate things with a Y8 block/Z6 head? Why not just run a straight Z6? I recently put in a Z6 tranny on my Y8 anyways.

For a built SOHC, is the Z6 the easiest way to go, from a tuning and mechanical aspect? I know Y8's are known to have problems with the oil pump and oil starvation, but I haven't heard too much about Z6's having problems.

Thoughts?

z6 block and y8 head is the way to go. just make sure you get a GOOD tune.

I thought the Y8 head is the devil, tuning-wise?

I mean, I have a decent Crome map on my car right now, and it runs pretty damn well actually.

i was under the impression that the z6 head flows alittle bit better

not really sure where i got that from, so if i am mistaken please correct me.

i personally run a z6 block and z6 head.
i should see 400 by the end of may
so i say go all z6

I basically want to have the same power output/setup as you.

I got my setup running last night - Precision SC50 .48 a/r turbo (basically a T3/T4e 50-trim with a ported compressor housing from Precision), ramhorn manifold and 3" downpipe/cat/exhaust. I'm looking to make around 330-350whp @ 23-25 psi and have a killer street car

run the z6 block/z6 head. The combustion chambers of the z6 are hemi-spherical while the y8 is more squarish (helps reduce detonation potential??) but also requires a different tune than your standard turbo engine. Plus the z6 is obd1 so your IACV and IAT will work much more like stock than using OBD2 equipment. (I assume your tuning with CROME or ubderdata) Also the z6 head has a larger oil pump (y8 has crank fluctuation sensor and less room for the oil pump, as well as a useless knock sensor.)

That being said i will be slapping a z6 head on my y8 block not because i want to but because im lazy and broke.

you can put any dseries intake manifold so the IACV and IAT have nothing to do w/ the actual head. only problem is the distributor...

ive heard bad things about the y8 oil pumps, so i'd go w/ the z6 bottom end.

if your gonna do a z6 bottom end, with a y8 head, i hear there is something you need to do on the cam to make the timing line up right? something about it needing to be one tooth off (i dont know everything about it, but i have read it a few differents times)

but instead of goin through all the hassle of that, might as well go with the z6 head too

run a straight z6 swap, the head flows better than the y8 (even though the y8 has better anti-detonation quench areas), i would run a y8 tranny though for the steel shift forks as opposed to the z6 aluminum ones. Also by sticking with a z6 head you can run obd1 much easier without screwing with as much ****

I havent had any problems with my y8block/z6 head setup. I say go with whatever you got. Throwing the z6 head on only requires a slight modification to the y8 distributor to make it fit and an adjustable cam gear which if you are going all out and building it you will probably get anyways along with maybe a zex 59300 cam ...oh and 1 z6 headbolt with the rest y8's. That is what I was told on the headbolts and thats what i've been using.

Doesn't it seem to you that the Y8 timing issues have been resolved over at PGMFI?

J. Davis posted some awesome D16Y8 maps, the one I'm running is from Jeffciv23 or whoever. It's setup for P2P timing, and it used a similar-sized turbo with DSM 450's like I'm running. My car pulls well with the new setup.

Yea his higher timing maps are about where they need to be, but he said he wasn't yet able to completely tune the lo cam map. What we need is for somebody to get one on a load bearing dyno and completely tune a stock y8 because nobody has figured out how the heck the p2p ecu interprets this stuff and what corrections it applies. I'm pretty satisfied running my z6 head now though. Not to mention the z6 head is setup for providing more flow espescially at higher power levels. I believe zexman did a comparison once and lost some serious power switching to a y8 head...although full race did make a ton of power with their y8 head setup in that pinks car.

the y8 head on the pinks car was pretty much the farthest thing from a stock head lol, it flowed almost as well as a b16 head...

I'm building a y8/a6 setup right now and from what I've been thinkin the d15b or b1/2 would be the best bottom end. Actually, I think a straight d15b would be best. You'll have a stroke/bore that is close to a b16. And, it will only sacrafice a few cc of displacement. I think I'm going to build a6 bottom end and try and destroke it with a d15 crank.

what rods are you using? The d15b1 and b2 rods are tiny. Not sure about the jdm d15b rods though. I would just get a straight d15b if you want to do all that.

I put in eagle rods. I just need to know if rod journals on the d16 and d15 crank are the same diameter. I also have to see if anymore notching is required with the d15 crank, I would assume less since the approach angle should be more narrow because of the short stroke.

I'm considering going to a Z6 next year because of the Y8 tuning issues.
