Default 275whp @ 13 psi a lil low? Is on XS Power junk though!

I've decided to get the Civic out the garage and start replacing the xs power junk that is on there and try and figure weather anything else was effecting the dyno numbers i got.

It was tuned on Hondata S300 @ 13 psi and made 275whp which i thought was a lil low?

I decided to spend most of my hard earned on the engine and cheaped out on the turbo kit (bad move i know) i had the car on the road for around 2 months before taking it off and saving for a new manifold etc. During this time the bov wouldn't let off, seals went in the turbo even with restrictor, wastegate brace formed a hairline crack.

Spec:
B16
Wiseco low comp pistons, Eagle rods, ACL bearings
ARP's, Skunk springs & retainers
AEM fpr, RC 550's, Walboro pump
3 bar map
stock head, cams & sleeves
2.5' ic piping, downpipe etc.

So my question is that do you guys think it's down to the combo of **** manifold & turbo or possibly also the tune?

cheap parts, b16 cams dont help. The manifold alone is a really bad peice, get rid of it.
i made 245 on a ssac mani and 12 psi, got ram horn and tial and it picked up almost 60 hp at same boost levels

you didn't note the exhaust setup.. my guess is you bottlenecked the exhaust and that's killing your numbers.. I run a 90* off the turbo pointing straight down on my setup.. people give me awful looks and that alone is worth it

Thanks for the replys, he did say the manual boost controller wasn't helping things either. The downpipe and center pipe i had made is 2.5 inches straight through to the backbox, will upload a pic.

Gonna give it a clean too, the things filthy!

Well first.. it didn't make 275 on 13 psi.. look at your boost graph on the top end. It is falling off hard. Fix that issue with maybe a PWM boost control setup through the ecu and it will run much better on the top end.

although the xs power stuff is junk, I think there are other issues with the vehicle itself. we have a lot of cars that run those turbos and they make decent power n run good times. they lack quality and don't usually last. but when working, they should still make power.

in comparison (even though every setup is different and there are many many variables) back in the day i had a b16 stock sleeve, piston rod block, stock head gsr cams. and it made 360whp @ 12psi with a straight T3 turbo and ebay tubular manifold. So I'd deffinately recommend some better cams and goin through your whole setup. Somethings not right there.

Is there really an issue with what type of boost controller you use as far as power goes? I was just going to make mine from Home Depot fittings lol.

Hmmm i don't know where to start on it really!

I'm fitting a profec b controller in the hope it holds the boost better, would the lack of bov also cause low numbers?

Also the pistons i'm using are quite a low compression (think i remember 8.8-9.0?) unsure if these are meant for engines running a high amount of boost? I did a compression test and the numbers were equal across and the tuner did a leakdown test for me which never chucked up anything obvious. I never thought the standard cams would give me low numbers as at the time i wasn't sure which profile of cam to go with.

I'd really like to rip it to bit's and start a fresh, lack of fundage is stopping me getting a new manifold and turbo til the summer when i plan on getting it back on the road.

Ain't that true! I just wasn't sure if it was all down to the junk turbo & manifold or a combo of other things. Like i said earlier i spent the cash i had on the engine parts and got a bit carried away in my pursuit of boost really. I know i ****ed up so it's out the garage now getting put right. I'm hoping with a nice manifold / turbo combo and a good boost controller it should pick a few hp's.

Any how thanks for the comments / suggestions peeps, i'm sure i can pass on the junk bits to someone else too keen for there own good like me.

I feel like ive ruined a mint SiR2!

Manifold is probably the biggest power sapper you have.

In all honesty the numbers aren't bad for the boost you are on. It really doesn't take anything special to make HP.

I almost guarantee if you put a boost controller on the car that holds the boost more steady it will make +20-30 more.

I mean yea.. you can always better the setup. But if you want to make the best out of what you have just get something on there that can control the boost a bit better. Might be good idea to check around for leaks in the charge pipes and/or the pre-turbo exhaust stream.

Also the 57 trim turbo that they list on Ebay aren't true 57 trim turbos. They are more like 45 trim wheels. We have measured them here and they are definitely not 57 trim wheels.

Also something that will help is if you get rid of that twin loop muffler for something with a more straight through design.

I don't think its really the manifold/turbo killing ALL the power. Its the turbo sucking up exhaust gas coming out of the dump tube, which is 12" away from it. Exhaust gas will make ZERO power per CFM, and loose even more due to higher IAT's. You will gain the most power per dollar if you get an extension welded to it to put it back into the DP or extend it past the oil pan (or out the bumper).

I do recall someone using an XS turbo, and they did gain 50whp when changing to a Garrett 57trim (same turbo size, same boost). The problem was the thrust bearing was dying, causing lots of friction, therefore choking the exhaust.

x2 Like John said the twin loop is not going to help with flow.....Also you can see at the end of the plot it's dropping off...Get a good boost controller and you should make better power

I see 1 main thing that is giving you low numbers. The twin-loop exhaust! Get rid of that and get a free-flowing straight through 3" exhaust. A twin-loops job is to create backpressure and it's mostly used on NA setups. Your trying to have the LEAST amount of backpressure possible on a turbo setup, so that exhaust is hurting you. As someone else stated as well the location of the dumptube isn't helping.

when you say low compression pistons? How low? that makes an even bigger difference psi/power range on the same turbo.
