220whp b16a turbo build, Turbo Selection?
Well, I've been dead bent on a jrsc setup for a while but have just come to my senses and realized from an efficiency and daily driveability standpoint that a turbo setup is my best bet.
I'm very familiar with turbo setups, so no questions about supporting mods. I'm just trying to get some real world opinions on what people have done in the past as far as turbo selection in a situation like mine.
Goals:
- 220whp, with an absolute ceiling of 250whp down the road
- Instant boost response, pretty much a supercharger without all the IAT issues
- Price is sort of an issue, like less than $150, but the turbo is the heart of the system so I'll pay a bit
- Stock b16a, maybe gsr cams down the road
Some turbos I've had in mind are.
-WRX turbo, TD04H-13t
-Older Volvo T3's
-Saab IHI's
Let me know what you guys think.

GT28R would be a nice turbo. Quick spool along with decent top end for 220/250whp. Full boost is around 3500rpm and should hold perfect for the set-up your talking about. I'd personally go with some ITR/CTR cams because they are a little bit more aggressive but nothing not practical for daily driving.
Hope this helps and good luck with everything.

Just curious what were the points that made you decide to go turbo instead of jrsc? I've been tossing both turbo and jrsc back and forth for a long time now and haven't been able to make up my mind...

I'll second on the Drag kit, I had their Gen II kit on my 99' Si and it put out 242whp at 7psi on stock internals with supporting mods. Spools quick too.. I have my old dyno plot on the compy somewhere.. I'll see if I can find it.

"Spools quick" is relative - unless you have 7000+rpm.
I would suggest a T3 Super 60 with a Stage 3 exhaust wheel and a .63 AR exhaust housing.
Or you can do a very small T04E 40 trim with a .63 AR exhaust with a Stage 2 wheel.

Re: (Rob03Pro5)
if you are looking for a cheap used turbo for those power goals there is also the 16g mitsubishi turbo, and the 14b though im not sure if the 14b can produce 220 at the wheels it will spool up nice and fast.

Re: (93cxhatchsir2)
what turbo comes in the gen ii drag kit 57trim stg3 .63 hot?
or if you wanted to go the cheaper route try to find a used 28r off of a nissan i think they are still bb and i know some VW guys who have made as much as 300 whp and it would spool uber fast
or prolly the cheapest route would be a t3 off of a ford thunderbird turbo coupe i think it is a .63 50 or 60 trim straight t3
if your going to be making your own manifold you could get a used evo turbo for cheap and that would work really good to
for the power you listed you have a TON of options from top of the line 28rs to the cheapest route that would prolly be the t3 listed above
basicly if your making a manifold get an evo or subie turbo preferably the STI turbo if not get i would try to find a .63 t3 50 or 60 trim, on a b16 you don't want want a .48 42 t3 it'll suck up high in the rpms and thats where your motor shines and i think that would be pointless my .02

Re: (spoolin turbo s)
The Drag Kit had a t3/t4 57 trim.. I believe it was a .63 hot. It was spooled by 4k rpms and held nicely through the powerband.. Great street turbo IMO. I would buy it again, but I'm getting a great deal on a AFI kit with the same turbo.

I've got a brand new spoolin performance cast manifold w/downpipe and dumptube and hardware for sale, it's flanged to fit your favorite t3 flanged turbo and common style wastegate (like tial 38mm).................
I'd say that with a 50trim t3/to4e would be your best bet. Room to grow and upgrade without the turbo being super expensive.

A 14B has a similar exhaust as a stg1 Garrett, but a smaller compressor than a t3 60trim. The turbo will spool very quick, and can take you to 250whp w/o much extras like cams. Someone had a D16 that made 240whp with a bad cylinder on the 14B. FYI my friend had an old SiR motor with a 60trim t3/stg1 .63ar turbo, and at 9psi it made about 250whp. 9psi by 3500 with a 3" dp ending before the shifter. A 14b would spool even faster. The GT28R would be similar, if you choose to spend that much.

lol he said under $150, anything that starts with a "GT" goes for a good bit more than that.
For that kind of money dude, I would either try my luck with an ebay turdblow, or something off of a factory turbo car.
I'd save up and do it right the first time.

straight off a factory turbo car, but he'd have to wrestle sr20 guys for:
the coveted Pulsar GTiR T28. It's the largest straight T28 you can get. Even bigger than a GT28R....and you won't notice the difference in spool time. It'll easily make 250whp.

Well, I'm starting with an RB20 turbo. T3 flange so it fits with most common manifolds. I'll report back when it's all together.
Most will say it's too small, but i'm not aiming for what most HTer's are. So we'll see how it goes.

you can't push too much boost on those. The compressor blades are plastic. At like 12psi or more, they'll shatter.
As said, I've got a mani/downpipe/dumptube combo for sale that'd work for you.....

I used a T3 from a volvo and pieced together the rest of my kit. Log manifold from drag and 450cc injectors from a 1st gen eclipse. At 5psi I made 219hp on a street tune and 235hp on a dyno tune. It was a blast to drive.

i would also vouch for the super 60 with the .63 a/r. On my friend's car and he spools up around 3000 rpm even with a 2.25" exhaust and 2.5" dp. However i don't know where you would get one for 150....they go for 400ish brand new. Great little turbo tho! I was very impressed by it.
