Default *PICS* DIY: OEM DSM side mount intercooler *PICS*

Minimal modifications to the intercooler.
All work was done by me -except my dad did my fan. The fan is as sturdy as it gets. Ghetto Supastar!

Any questions?

I just installed mine yesterday. The fan's a good idea. I ended up cutting the wheel well cover about level with the top of the IC and replacing it all the way down with heavy duty metal screen. It was surprisingly strong, but easy to work with. And the stuff costs about $8 for a 4x8 sheet at Home Depot.

The problem with installing these side mount IC's on our 6G cars is it's tough to get flow straight to them because the fog light holes don't line up nicely like on a 5G. What I'm wondering is whether the action of the wheel (which creates a *lot* of wind itself) will actually force air "backwards" through the IC or if I should try to duct in air from the front.

Creaative. Hopefully the fan improves cooling efficiency.

I hope so too, but since the fan wasn't mounted on the intercooler itself that flow might not be as good as I hope. Not sure ... anyone care to comment? Also, the fan is a pusher-type (obviously) and cannot pull, but someone else told me that the puller-type is better. I don't know, that other guy was just making assumptions and **** but it got me thinking. (He's just jealous )

PS. I am getting an XS-Engineering intercooler anyways. This was my ghetto setup.

wow thats pretty cool... i just got one of those from a friend.. haven't tried it out yet.. but i just have the piping in so good it doesn't even move.. didn't have to get any type of mounts or anything.. looks good.. what kit are u running? if you have the greddy kit you can take off the little pipe that comes off the turbo and just turn the L shapped pipe around and u don't have to cun anything except for the pipe coming off the ic that points up...did it all myself and i am proud to!

We installed a 1G DSM sidemount on a 6G civic last year w/ the greddy SOHC kit. Worked like a champ. Only thing we did was cut a small tunnel out of the front of the bumper to get some more air back to it. No complaints though. The SOHC Greddy kit almost seems designed for that IC.

You might have better results if you were to bend that bracket and mount it on the backside (pulling) air through it. The reason why I say this is because when your up to speed the air will do a sufficient job of cooling.. this way air is going 50, 60, 70mph hitting the IC not the fan.. that fan would be more of a restriction on the front (it would be good for taking off at stop lights). It would seem to be more efficient at cooling having it exposed to on-coming air.. just a thought...

it'd be a miracle if the fan helped more than it hindered, this was tested once before but yeilded negative results... hopefully i can find it again....
