Default **waterpump problems from boost**

anyone have any problems with their waterpumps after slappin on a turbo kit? i have this irritating rattle in my motor that i want to get rid of. its more on the right side where the cam gears are located... but a little lower. i was thinkin it was the rod bearings or some major damage from boostin on every ricer i see. since i started to notice coolant leaks.. im also guessing its the waterpump.

i stopped by the dealer today and a technician said waterpump problems happen during hot temps and weather. something about water dryin fast and antifreeze not being a proper lubricant. so he explained how the waterpump might make a noise and leak... blah blah blah. he pulled out a can of waterpump lubricant that you can add to the radiator. i wasnt sure if it would be worth buying.. its $27 for that small can.

anyone of you guys have problems with your waterpump? it sounds alittle like a marble spinnin around makin little tick noises as it hits a metal wall... not a ping. this a common sign of a waterpump gettin defective? the noise is not as loud when the engine warms up.. but its still somewhat noticable.

your water pump bearing is taking a crap,
a visual sign is leakage around the water pump area, and noise.!

dont spend money on crap (waterpump lube),

the longer it goes the worse it gets, more noice and more leakage..

get that water pump replaced ASAP, if the pump seizes your gonna have some major problems!!! I wouldn't even drive the car if I were you until you replace it. Your timing belt will skip like a ****!

just out of curiousity... what types of problems can happen if the pump seizes?

Yeah overheating, the timing belt will probably skip and that means bent valves and head damage. I would replace it asap.

More than you care to repair....thats for sure.

Just replace the pump....pretty cheap part, and you get to do a coolant flush while your at it. Perhaps even a thermostat replacement maybe in order.

I'd look at this as an opppurtunity to take care of some things you may have been neglecting (not at all saying that you have been though).

good point, while you're in there replace the timing belt and tensioner as well. this is why if I ever get boost, I'll be keeping a spare motor handy

Yeah if the water pump seizes completely it could make your timing belt either skip or possibly heat up enough to break... then you're looking at more than enough damage to keep you busy.

you guys know that bardahls rad stop leak? well I use that in my cooling system, i take the little bottle and add only the lubricant solution, I leave the black sealing pellets behind, it really helps the life of colling system parts, it coats everything with a nice lube film that does not hinder heat transfer and basically oils the water pump also. just dont let ny of the black pellets inside.

i didnt think it would cause the timing belt to skip. i figured i'd watch my temp. to make sure everything was ok. now im worried about commuting to school today.

i heard doin the waterpump install is a bitch. how hard was it? any technical advice would be appreciated. im plannin on tacklin the feat over the weekend. i really do need to take care of the things i neglected to do. my car is in need of some maintenance.

if you can change cam gears you can do this, you have to remove the plastic timing belt cover and crap, there are a couple of really nasty hard to reach bolts in the middle there, I also try to jam the tensioner wide open with something so I can get the belt back on later, the pump bolts are sealed with factory loctite, just make sure you drain your rad first and do a clean job so coolant doesnt get everywhere, you know how bad that **** reeks right? I drain my coolant and then run a garden hose to the thermo housing till just water runs out, thats my coolant flush for the spring too.

your water pump runs off of your timing belt, so if the waterpump was to seize, your timing belt would also. I'd wait a few weeks, and gather everything you need to do while you're in there. it's not a fun job, it takes a lot of patience.. but once you get it over with you'll be happy you saved yourself the 400-500 dollars (seriously). good luck
