Default **turbo pro's help me out!!!**

right now im running a 97 B18B in my crx with a tdo4h-15g greddy turbo and manifold off a sohc vtec civic and the manifold is ported to fit the b-series......i want something bigger this turbo is tooo small it pulls good low end then just dies off i want to get one of the dropshop manifolds and a new turbo....i was going to just throw a 16g on my manifold but i think i might be losing some power threw the manifold.......if i go with a new manifold and turbo what turbo should i run??? what would be best for the b18b?? should i just go with the 16g??
thanks a lot guys and gals!!!

You have 2 options
1-Ditch the greddy setup and pick yourself up a drag kit. Since you bought a sohc kit for your dohc I take it that money is probally a issue with you.
2-Pick yourself up a 16g or 18g turbo and a new manifold and call it a day.

how much boost are you running on the 15g? perhaps an 18g would be the most direct dropin upgrade for you.

the b18c1 and b18b turbo kits from greddy both use the TD05H-18G...which is why i'd suggest taking a look at that. if you want the most power, then you'll need a new manifold and a t3/t04e turbo

Yea, go with the t3/t04e. I think there's a groupbuy going on for $525shipped?

the problem with the t3/t04e is that i will need a new manifold and a wastegate! with the 16g it will bolt right up to my manifold and its internal wastegate.........is the 16g a bad turbo? too small?? will there be a big difference between the 16g and the t3/t04e?? and the t3/t04e is the best.....better then say a normal t3/t4???
thanks and sorry fo rstupid questions!

You'll make a lot more power topend out of the t3/t04e than the 16g. I'd spend the extra money to get the mani and the turbo...imo. Also the t3/t04e is the same thing as the t3/t4. The "e" just stands for the compressor size

Why in the hell would you need a bigger turbo if you are only boosting 7-8 psi. That turbo dosen't die off untill 13 psi. If you wanted to boost more than 13 go with the 18g. The only difference you should feel by going to a bigger turbo is less low end torque. My buddy was runnig 8 psi from t-25 on b18(LS) and the only reason he did not like his turbo is because he couldn't get traction at all down low. So he went t3/t4 and now he whines because he realizes he will never utalize the full potencial of that turbo. We are poor college kids and to boost more than 8 psi an any stock honda block is asking for some kind of trouble and the money it would take to get beyond 8psi is way too much for us right now. Anyway, Unless traction is your only issue, stay small and enjoy the bounty of low end torque!

Well, a T25 turbo (from like a mitsubishi) is normally too small for a B-series motor, now with VTEC what will happen with these turbos is that they will actually flow soo much air that the turbo is spinning so fast and is running at so little effeciency there that it usually actually starts dropping off the boost a pound or 2. But, without VTEC what will happen if it doesn't actually fall off on the boost is it will still be spinning way too fast to have any kind of effiency so it wqill basically start to loose power. If you friend had problems with traction down low and not up top that is a perfect example. Turbo sizing is not as easy as everyone thinks. With his LS motor he is good with a T3/T4 and it is sized pretty good, it lands in a good high effeciency island on the map and spins at a pretty low rpm (110000, 100000 or so) so it is pretty good. Try and plot that compressor off of the little 14b turbo on a compressor map with the LS motor and see how very far off you are on the chart. I don't know how long he had that turbo on his car, but if he had it on his car for over a year the thing is probablly beet to crap!!! poor little turbo, think about it, a little 14b, about the size of a glazed donut... Not my idea of an effecient turbo. And if you still don't believe me, give me a compressor map and I'll plot an LS engine for that turbo and prove that it's not a good choice... In the mean time here is an LS at 8.5:1 static c/r plotted on a mid sized T4 compressor map.
the point of intersect where the dot is is where the LS motor is. See, that's why a B-series motor needs something bigger than a 14b. I would get a T3 or a T3/T4 and even a T3/T4B like the drag kits use is even good! Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any more questions...

Later,

Sean C.

yah thanks 20lb.teg! very intereseting!
right now i have a 15g little single cam turbo and it is too smalll.....off the line is nothing but wheel spin and it dies off by 4600 rpm or so....i dont know if its the turbo or what but it just dies off....... and yes i am a kid on a budget and dont want to spend all the extra money on the manifold and wastegate and turbo....wheni could get a 16g for around 500 bucks! can you plot a LS on a 16g map???? at 8-9 psi will i be losing power with the 16g??
thanks again foe the help! this is making me go crazy.

Well, if you like the manifold you have (as in it flows alright) and you are short on money why don't you just make an adapter plate...? As long and you have the two turbo flanges, the wastegate flange and somebody that's a competent welder than you can do it. Here, use this example:

But instead of it being all cast iron just get a short section of probablly 1 3/4" exhaust tubing (maybee 2", not too good with collector sizing before a turbo sizing maybee somebody could help me out here....) cut the hole in the side like you are welding on a BOV flange and instead weld that wastegate flange to a short 1 1/4" pipe that's about an inch and a half then on the other sides roll the end of the bigger exhaust pipe so you can weld the flanged on. And if you really want it done right you can weld some sort of support onto it as well that connects to your turbo manifold, or bolts onto where the exhaust/turbo manifold bolts to the head... Try it man I made one of these for my car when I was first boosted then I ordered a totally different setup and sold that one. It only cost me about 40 bucks with flanges and all materials... Hope this helps man.

Later,

Sean C.

i did a junk yard turbo set up on my 93 vx and i ran it for over 6 monthes with no intercooler at 4psi...and i JUST went to the junk yard and picked up an intercooler off of a ford probe for $20 and saw a big difference. the air going in is alot colder, just like adding a CAI on stock motor. i highly recommand the use of intercooler...if u got any questions IM me

Yea,
Yea, right now i'm in the process of putting a greddy SOHC turbo onto my B16 right now. I was wondering too, boosting at 5-7 psi, when will I feel the turbo plateau? Will running such a small turbo be more harmful?? Since it prolly will create heat due the inefficiency in the higher rpms. I am running an intercooler on the side note.
