**need HELP from auto tranny experts**
my girls 99 integra is automatic. lately, weve been havin trouble with the auto shifter. i dont know the exact words.. but its the mechanism you switch the gears to, such as P,N,D3,D4, etc. the thing is... at start-up... sometimes its stuck at P(park). sometimes, when i fidget with it... it unlocks and i get to move the shifter into drive. at times... i have to put the key in the safety lock to be able to move the shifter.
do you have any idea what may be causing this?
i figured id ask you guys... since you guys know your stuff.

Re: **need HELP from auto tranny experts** (dlplayboy)
It's an auto... swap it
Nah, did she park on and hills without putting the ebrake up?? What that'll do is put strain on the shifter mechanism, cause its HARD to get the car out of park when the car's rolled back on the gears, and it'll bend sonething or other.
Anyway, make sure she ALWAYS uses the ebrake when parking on ANY kind of incline, and PRAY that nothing's messed up already...Maybe the bracket in the shifter itself is bent?
Hope this helps...

Hey man, i used to have the same problem with my car.
Do you have an aftermarket shift ****? If so, My local honda dealer said that might be the problem.
I used to have to unplug a wiring harness under my steering column.

hopefully it's still under warranty.
I doubt there are very many auto tranny experts on HT as the experts wouldn't have a auto...

well it could be as simple as the shifter button isnt being fully engaged... if you have an aftermarket shifter this would be a common cause of this.

i would just take apart the shifter handle and check. if its stuck, take it apart and press it down with your hand and if it is unstuck then there is something wrong with the mechanism that doesnt allow for full engagement. in that case just toss it for a quality aftermarket one and that should fix it... but if you dont mind the trip to the dealer then do that.

i think im goin to take the shifter apart and try to break it down as much as i can. i was just wondering if there would be a problem with her tranny. theres only less than 50,000miles on the odometer.

There should be a switch on the brake pedal for the shifter lock(if the Integra has to have the brake engaved before shifting from park). If so I would check this first. It is possible that the contacts of the switch are intermittenly not making a good connection.

Re: **need HELP from auto tranny experts** (SiR Kid)
hmmm interesting. i always thought there would be a switch on the steering wheel that would prevent the shifter from moving. last nite, my girl said to press hard on the brake... cuz sometimes it would work that way. thats another thing i should check out. where exactly should i look? is the switch located high above the pedal to where i would have to look upwards in the dash? or isit on the pedal mount itself?

Man,,,its so hard to explain where it is on my civic,,,but the integra shouldnt be that much different. I'd say its right where the floorboard and "underdash" meet...
If i could take picts i would, but i cant!
goodluck man!

It will be connected to the pedal with two wires coming off it.I am pretty sure the brake lights are also controlled by this switch. There may be a seperate switch for cruise control deactivation. You can use a jumper across the connector to rule out the wiring but the easiest way would be to ohm out the switch, with the pedal depressed.

Re: **need HELP from auto tranny experts** (magicwand)
well... i took a look at it. didnt see any kind of switch that i could toggle or anything that might look out of place. so i dont know whats goin on with it. its now to the point where pressin on the brake hard wont work anymore. i have no choice but to put the key in the shift lock. could it be that theres an air bubble in the brake cylinder?

Re: **need HELP from auto tranny experts** (dlplayboy)
took a look at it again and i found the switch! seems connected.. i pushed it in harder to see if it would make a difference. so far my girl has been able to get shift her gears without too much stress on the brakes. lets see how it goes for the next few days. thanks, guys.
