Default ***D16Y8 turbo tuning thread***

i am creating this thread to hopefully gather some good info on the tuning of this particular engine in one spot. i have searched and all of the info seems to be strewn about. i am getting ready to build and tune one and would like to be well informed. out of all the Honda engines out there this one seems to be one of the most misunderstood of them all, the reason for this is the funky 12* base timing versus the older generations of d-series, and the timing being based off of the knock sensor, not to mention the design of the ports and combustion chamber. so all you d16y8 tuning guru's chime in if you have any helpful info!

basically I usually start with a p28 map and work off of that. I would at least Pull a few degrees out from that as a start. The dyno will tell you how much the engine needs

i will post a couple of links to base maps aswell as my own modified version in which i smoothed out the timing maps. i will also post some info on oiling issues and how to fix them. i would like this to turn into a resource for all people planning on building one of these engines .

Let's see, to start off, make sure that the base mechanical timing is 12* and not the standard 16* that everything else runs off of.

Y8s really don't like timing. I've come to find that this is especially true in high load low rpm situations. IE, too much timing and the car likes to buck or hesitate.

High load timing is found out just like you normally would. Just start with less than your normally would.

Oh, and as far as building the engine goes. Use Y8 parts for the Y8 head. Swapping the cams and cam gears and all that with Z6 stuff really throws everything off.

Other than that, it's just like tuning any other engine. Slightly different timing curve that's all.

I invited him to this thread, hopefully he chimes in

heres a really good thread on modding the OIL PUMP for more pressure and flow. these engines have a bad rap for spinning bearings, so here is some preventative maintainance

here's a link to some base maps that may be of use. i have not used these so i cant comment on the effectiveness of them. just click on the type of ecu tuning program you use and find the appropriate map to use.

i was hoping people would be jumping all over this thread......but it might take a little time.

i still haven't done the base timing mod. the only problem i had was that i never zeroed out the base timing advance in crome and lifted the head on the highway..... i haven't had a problem since...

Do all these timing principals relate to the Y7 also?

1. Sync the distributor timing to the engine management system (i.e. lock timing at a static value such as 14 deg btdc in the ems & shoot the distributor timing & set it at the value you locked in.

2. Put the car on a dyno & tune it using basic tuning principals.

I would suggest using a software that actually works the way it should such as Hondata, Ectune etc.. :-)
