Euro - Disable 'auto-choke' on cold start?
Hi,
Dad has a Euro and lives in a warm climate (never dropping below 10 degrees celcius and up to 40 degrees) and does mainly short trips. He has found his fuel economy suffers greatly (up to 13l/100kms) -- Given that the car doesn't need the additional fuel to help warm it up and that he is happy to have it run in a mode where it thinks its already warm, is there an ECU modification or otherwise that I can make to the stock ECU (i.e. solder a jumper or similar) to make it so that the car always thinks its already at operational temperature?
This way even on short trips (i.e. 5-7 minute trips) he can enjoy the good fuel economy that he bought the car for.
Thanks guys - I know you guys love helping us aussies! lol

What is a Euro? Accord Euro R?
Make, model and year of the car will help.
The "auto choke" in most Honda's would be considered the fast idle thermal valve (FITV) If his car is equipped with a FITV, they are not computer controlled. They are temperature controlled via the engine coolant. So if your dad's car never sees cold temps you could do a FITV bypass.
If you do a search I believe that you should be able to find a DIY on how to do this procedure.

Just remember to clarify what your car is. We may not know what a "Euro" is.
But to answer your question regardless of model, or engine. You must have this enrichment period as fuel does not atomize the same when the engine is cold and it is a requirement to have a cold start enrichment, or as you are / maybe referring to as an auto choke.
Basically, that has to be there for the engine to operate properly.

Thanks guys -- Sorry car is a Honda Accord Euro 2007 model (K24) .. I understand that there must be a period to assist with warming the engine, however it seems highly excessive with high impact on fuel usage .. i.e. Seems to run in the 'cold' condition for a long time as short trips result in very high usage .. A lot of other people seem to be getting less than 13kms/100 !! Perhaps there is a program someone has for an economy stock tune? (rather than power?)
With regards to the temp valve I will come back however would that impact on fuel usage? Seems extraordinarily high usage when the engine isn't 'warm'.
All sensors are outputting within the acceptable range etc and no CEL's. Just want to figure out a way to reduce his mileage -- Its driven very easily in any case, ie never over 3500rpm really..

You can try replacing your thermostat if you have not done so already, as this can be the cause of a slow warm up time if the thermostat is stuck open (relatively common), it is not wise to "program" around this, as it is a basic fundamental that an engine has to operate by.

Ahhh .. so no-one has been able to reverse engineer the k-series yet except for hondata? how interesting. I'm suprised that some of the smarter kids out there haven't worked out the chips to replace etc ..
