B18c1 with type R pistons, cams, ECU?

Hello,

I am contemplating rebuilding my b18c1 with type R pistons(b18), type R cams(or skunk2 tuner stage 1), new valve springs, rod bolts, etc.. My questions is will a type R ECU run this set-up well, or should i go with a Hondata? I have to stay smog legal, and my b18c1 is a OBDI. My car is a 93 Si.

You will want to run some kind of engine management (hondata, chrome, Neptune) and have the car properly dyno tuned.

Yeah, i thought maybe a custom chip tuned for my mods. But Hondata would probably be a much safer bet, tune it for relaibility and emissions.

If you stay close to R cams a p73 ecu will run the car decent. I would advice a wide band to check afr’s. But A custom tune would be optimal

If its for emissions purposes, the P73 ecu should work to at least pass, I would switch to neptune/hondata/crome for most drive however

so run the type R ecu for smog, then switch to hondata for the other 364 days.

Here's a question. since the type R ecu is a OBDII and my car is OBDI, do i just run the OBDI to OBDII ecu jumper harness for smog(with the type r ecu) and then remove the harness and switch back to hondata(which will probably be a OBDI?

crap, missed the part of opening post that you were in an obd1 car, that changes things. You might end up having various codes like the crank fluctuation sensor and the 2nd o2 sensor behind the cat if you use a USDM itr ecu

I take it they'll do a tailpipe sniffer test since you were obd1? If they don't check for the ecu, you should be able to get away with a tune using hondata/neptune, crome chipped p28/p30 provided it passes the sniffer?

so don't even bother with the type r ecu and just go with the hondata. I don't think they check the ecu, as long as no CEL is on. I think its just the idle and rolling sniffer test

Yes, just go with Hondata and tune it. A quality tune will pass a smog sniff test.
