Preparing for hg install, rebooted

apologies if there is a thread that addresses this. Ive done some searching and nil and honestlu, my brain is mush at this point and im hoping someonemwill have mercy and help me out....

so, replacing hg on my d16y7. I'd actually installed it and got almost put back together but something was nagging me that didnt seem to go right on install, so I pulled the head back off to have a look....

it wasnt the problem I was worried about but thwre are issues that made it worth while.

1) some oil on hg - there was residual oil in 2 headvolt holes. I thought I had cleaned it out well enough using shop towels, apparantly not and will rectify that this time around

2) some white residue on cylinder wall mating surface and white globs in water jacket. I used scotchbrite and brakleen to clean suraces before install. I know now that many say this okay, others not so much, but whats done is done. Just wondering if someone can please tell me what this is and hiw to clean it for round two. Yes, I know there are zillions of posts out there of how to clean an engine deck, and thats kindof the problem, too much info and I feel like i missing something obvious.

3) perhaps a silly question - should water jacket be refilled or at least mostly filled with coolant before reassembly?

The white crusty stuff sounds like some corrosion on the aluminum. As long as it's not too bad where it effects the mating surfaces, you may be ok. Hard to say w/o seeing it.
Don't fill the engine with coolant until the head is on and all hoses are attached. The cooling system will self bleed 99% of the time.
