piston ring gap question
So I was filing my rings, and the second one I guess filed down a little easier than the top one cuz I was shooting for .023 and I ended up at .027-.028....is this ring f@cked now? Or am I ok? and another set came out at both .024, I was shooting for .019 and .023....just wondering if I need to get new rings?

Re: piston ring gap question
What are you trying to do with the motor?
You'll get more blow-by than normal but unless you care about every single HP you can get out of the motor, I wouldn't worry about it. |

piston ring gap question
Piston slap is caused by your piston to wall gap and has nothing to do with ring gap.
That being said, I don't know if running that big of ring gap is ok |
Re: piston ring gap question
Try measuring the rings in a different cylinder, maybe it's smaller
Could also be bigger,lol |

Could also be bigger, lol just gotta go slow and check it often. i also like to try and figure out the pattern of how many turns on the grinding wheel take off a certain amount of ring material and use it as a general guideline. may need a new ring set but you can likely get them for just one cylinder so not a huge financial loss |

Re: piston ring gap question
I guess it depends on how much another 2nd ring is and if you plan on driving this on the street.
A drag motor which is going to see WOT all the time, again I personally wouldn't worry about it. I've run rings with a larger gap than called for with no adverse effects other than oil dilution by the fuel. Some high end napier 2nd, may not be worth the extra $80 with shipping . . . basic $20 ring, it wouldn't hurt. |
Re: piston ring gap question
thanks for the input everybody, I think I am just gonna be on the safe side and order a new ring set for the one piston that's way off. I was just trying to avoid that, I'm kinda poor now that college started back up lol.
