did I just doom my engine to self-destruction?
had to purchase a new cylinder head a while back and am just now re-assembling the motor, Can't really explain :shrug:_why_, exactly, but followed a suggestion to use wire wheel to remove carbon from tops of pistons :boom: So today I was on the Autozone repair site and read: "NEVER use a wire wheel on pistons" (quote)!. :whirly: Did I just screw the pooch?

Re: did I just doom my engine to self-destruction?
If everything is put back together oh well. I've read sometimes this being ok but have no direct experience.
If you use a brass wirewheel probably better than a steel type. If still out of car, just put in some new npr pistons with npr rings and be set! |
Re: did I just doom my engine to self-destruction?
I have used small wire brushes to do this. Worked good and my engine didn't blow up. As long as you didn't that material off the top of the Piston you should be good.

Can't see it being an issue, I've done it before and seen it done many times, as long as you did the top only and didn't wire brush the skirts/side

Re: did I just doom my engine to self-destruction?
Just as a general FYI for everyone wanting to decarbon the pistons, valves or other parts that is in the USA.....
Piston Kleen is your safe - non toxic method to do just that. It's super expensive to bring to Canada but really a great tool for those in the states. It also does not have any DOT restrictions and is not considered a dangerous good. Piston Kleen Carbon Remover It's highly effective for burnt carbon deposits. Sadly for me, the shipping costs more than the product.:crook: You can also find it on amazon.com |
