Cam Timing setup questions

Hey Guys,

I was convinced my issue was that my timing had skipped a tooth. Car starts and initially AFR's are ok, idle is very rough. After 5 seconds the AFR goes to 10 and fuel fumes are ridiculous.

Took the valve cover off and set motor to TDC, and cam marks look they align, see pic below. Anyone else confirm this looks correct? Thinking now it might be an injector stuck open?

Re: Cam Timing setup questions

If you thing that the cam timing is off, I would take a credit card and place it flat on the cylinder head and see if it lines up with the marking on the cam gear (the red colored spot).
Also what kind of engine management system are you using? It could be an issue with the tune your running (cold start enrichment issues?)

1. too much fuel
2. too little air
3. faulty sensor readings

Last question: does the car run well once its warmed up?

Re: Cam Timing setup questions

Thanks for the suggestions EFort.

I double checked and the dizzy rotor was pointing to cylinder 1 so timing was not my issue.

I haven't actually fixed this yet but am know fairly confident a hole in my header is causing this. I have plans to replace the header anyway just now waiting on parts.

No I actually haven't let the car warm up, as i think due to the hole in the header, caused a faulty o2 reading and then pumped a shit load of gas into the cylinders.

If i look under the hood for 10 seconds my eyes start burning and start gagging from the fuel vapors. Also my oil is looking worse for wear now even though it was recently changed.

Re: Cam Timing setup questions

Are you running a closed loop 02 system? (stock ecu?) If so it maybe the ecu is trying to compensate for then false lean condition (that the sensor sees) that an exhaust leak will cause.
Any exhaust leaks would cause the afr readings (off the sensor) to run leaner then usual (Bernoulli's principle:high speed exhaust is at lower pressure then ambient air so air is sucked into the exhaust).
If the car really is running rich do to this, then this could explain the rough idle (too rich causes burn time of air+fuel to increase = rough idle)

I hope you get your car fixed, keep me posted!

Fuck Yeah, Little update. Still waiting on headers but while I was waiting I was cleaning up a lot of shit wiring.

So apparently it was my wire to my ECT that caused it too run super Rich. I have fixed a lot of wires and she is running pretty good again.

Back to waiting for parts.
