I started tuning methanol ~9 years ago, I've never worn a mask and all 7 of my brain cells are still intact. Burning methanol gives off formaldehyde gas which will sting your eyes and burn your nose after a while [srs]. I'm sure that in concentrated amounts over time it would cause ill effects and eventually death, but so does gasoline exhaust. Just don't trap your daughter/wife in the garage while you free-rev it for hours and you should all be fine. Regardless of fuel.

Once plus, you could add some of this and tell all your neighbors your car is running on pina coladas.

Not doubting the results or insulting anyone but the cost of ftw black $160 per 5 gallon and vp m5 is $40 per 5 gallon and this methanol does go by extremely fast

I've started my dragster (lab grade methanol, $200 for 55gallon drum) in my garage once after I got the last motor together. Only ran for 5-6 seconds and smelled like hell.

I wouldn't run it again like that in a closed area but outside you wouldn't have a problem. I've never felt like I needed a mask outside and I've got zoomies and have a 4.5 gallon per minute pump. Even on the TA/FC stuff I've done, still didn't need a mask.

Black is 99 per 5 if I'm not mistaken currently

with todays e85 based fuels, are intercoolers still necessary on turbo cars? do they run as cool as cars on alcohol?

8 seconds at a time probably not as needed as most would think, especially on ethanol fuels.

Is this not something that Tony and think Miller had done with their individual cars? If I am not mistaken people were in shock about it not having intercooler. I just saw this thread from 2012 about it. Interesting interesting, can you say CCC lol.

Tony tested it towards the end of him having the car and I remember him saying it was down on some power. I don't know all the details would have to ask him but he posted about it on fb.

Tex Blackwell ditched his IC when he went to methanol as well. I know he picked up a bunch of power but he changed more than just fuel.

M5 is the worse when it gets to your eyes. I used to hate having the rotaries around back in the day because you would end up watery eyed and gagging from the smell.

Good Writeup!

Great post Xenocron!!!
Using M5 fuel @ forced induction, something about 29psi, can you tell about your experience at the timming map? 20 degrees would be fine?
Thanks.

I have not personally tried m5 on a forced induction application, the fuel demands here would be quite high. Mechanical pump/injection might be required

Rethinking my fuel choice and with that fuel system. Going with m5 as opposed to my previous plans of e85/c85. All motor k20/k24 with goals of 350-380hp. Car will have a mini fuel cell up front so it won't have an in tank pump, will a single Bosch 044 and id1000s be sufficient?

With that power in mind ID1300 would be better.

So you think a Bosch 044 and id1300s will do it?

Chris, when tuning the K series NA drag motors on VP M5 using the NGK iridium 8 spark plugs are you leaving the gap set what it is from the factory or are you re gapping the plugs? Also you mentioned that you tune to .72 lambda under load. What do you tune lambda to at idle?

Just to throw this up here, we made 17 more whp on an all motor B series switching to FTW black from M5. Car picked up 6 mph on the track, hard to beat that from just changing fuel.

You planning on tuning the car with FTW Black to see if there's more power to be made? I must say that is impressive for just switching fuels.
