welded diff stock axles...
Looking for people with a welded diff and stock axles experience..
i dont care about drivability i ran a welded diff before it sucked, but i dont want to explode the stock diff in the burnout box every time i go to the track. car will be making 600HP min. i know stock axles are hit or miss but my only fear is breaking on at the top end and going in to the wall. [ive even seen the video of this happening] LSD is not in the cards right now please dont tell me to upgrade i know what im dealing with here. So any experiences with breaking a stock axle going 100+? every axle i broke was on launch with shitty hybrid motorsport axles when the car had a k series. back to B and getting a good pair of old OEMs. need to know odds of breaking an axle non launch. any input is appreciated thanks. |
Re: welded diff stock axles...
Why bother welding it? I'm still on a stock, open diff and stock axles. Never broke an axle or diff. Car males over 600, ran many 10 sec passes. And bracket raced every weekend of our racing season here during 2011(about 85 hits last year).
Just sayin, if you're that worried, why bother? Just leave it open until you can afford a diff. Sounds like the safer route to me.. |
Re: welded diff stock axles...
Thats the input im looking for,its leave open or weld it. ive had a few friends explode open diffs by over spinning them in the burnout box and such. need more info to make my decision.

Re: welded diff stock axles...
Open diffs are dime a dozen in the Bseries world, f it and blow it up I say. Better than running the car into the wall at 100mph.

Re: welded diff stock axles...
ive been running stock open diffs and stock axles. Mid 10's. multiple 1.60 60ft's. car made over 700 but never got to hit that button. But always went down with 550whp. never had a broken axle in my life.

Re: welded diff stock axles...
Ive blown a couple of open diffs. So I weld mine now (until I can afford LSD soon). Havent had an axle break, but once. I actually snapped both on the line, because I let out of the clutch a little too quick. Never happened again, knock on wood.

Re: welded diff stock axles...
What cluch are u running that has a lot to do with it also I've broken sets of OEM axles on the line with a twin disc at 650hp on a jdm LSD diff no problem with the diff doing third gear burn outs at the box.live the diff stock and take extra axcels and try to pre-load

Re: welded diff stock axles...
Weld it... We have welded diffs in like ten different cars they all make power and i havent seen a crash yet.
|
Re: welded diff stock axles...
Can't think about what could happen to you or you're car only...gotta also think about the guy in the next lane. Seen a car totalled because the other guy was running a "welded" diff.

Re: welded diff stock axles...
its better than spitting a diff out on the ground every pass
|
Re: welded diff stock axles...
The only thing that I see breaks diff's is unlucky burnouts...
I would never consider welding one and going 140+mph myself... I pay more every month for health insurance than a upgraded diff would cost. |
Re: welded diff stock axles...
Lol i went 155 with one countless times

i know a pro would be cost...a welded oem diff is probally fairly cheap too have done correctlly... |
Re: welded diff stock axles...
few years ago had a axle brake on the highway one night with the welded diff, at about 160mph it let go, it happened so fast it was like a blur, in the camera the car went shoulder to shoulder on a 4 lane road about 3 times, luckily its was late and no one was on the road, and the guy we were running was quite a ways back, if not it could of been very bad, and its always in the back of my mind
makes you realize spending $800 on a good lsd is way cheaper than a life/s and every thing in the car |

Re: welded diff stock axles...
I know a lot of crawler guys that use "Lincoln Lockers" but, they are not going 100+ miles an hour and trailer their rigs to the trails so i don't see a big issue. However with our cars its a whole different situation. I feel that spending 600-800 for a good LSD is far more better than the possibility of injuring yourself or the guy next to you. Not to mention the destruction that could happen. You can probably even find a good used unit for half that in the classifieds if you keep your eyes open.
I never ran a welded diff but, did use a Spool and had an axle break at Fontana. I am glad it broke at take off because it pulled the car right towards the wall at the snap of a finger. Needless to say that spool came right out after that weekend and a Quaife was installed ;) Just my opinion   |
Re: welded diff stock axles...
Not to jack your thread and try to sell you something, but I can help you. I have a used LSD out of a hydro GSR that I'd sell you dirt cheap ($200 plus ship & paypal) It was what was in my swap when I bought it, and has never seen much more than stock hp. Nothing wrong with it I just wanted to put a Quaife in my new build. PM me if interested
|
Re: welded diff stock axles...
Buy back your LSD GSR trans from me. I'll give you a deal :)

Re: welded diff stock axles...
i say keep it open until you can afford the LSD
as far as stock axles: keep in mind that they are made of a softer metal than the aftermarket. most of us are preloading our cars and not snapping axles in burnout or launch. with the softer metal, the axle will start to twist and then break on the big end. we have pulled several axles out after passes to see them starting to twist, only time will allow them to snap on the big end, causing potential disaster. just keep an eye on them. aftermarket axles are much stronger so they wont twist easily, and if they are going to break usually it will be a quick clean break during a burnout or launch. |

QFT. pfi, recommending running a welded diff on cars that are capable of breaking axles is not good advice. Sorry. Lsd>welded diff.
