Icon6 Replacing Damaged Darton MID Sleeves

I would like to know if I can replace the Darton MID sleeves on a Honda B18C block I have been given.

I am not sure about the history of the block or where it was sleeved but the MID sleeves have been bored to 86mm and 1 cylinder is now out of round.

I would like to replace all 4 sleeves at a more conservative 84mm bore.

Is this feasible?

I read on the installation manual that a sleeve can be removed by using a slide hammer but it makes no mention of all the sleeves being removed.

Does anyone have experience in replacing single or all the sleeves on a Darton mid block?

Any pictures or a how to would be greatly appreciated!!

I am pretty sure it can be done. There is machine work involved so you may want to contact your machinist.

Just call Darton it will be a cheaper rate since it would be a return customer.

Thanks alot guys! Problem is I am in Singapore and I am wondering if I should send the block to the US or just order the sleeves and have it done locally.

If the complex machining is already done, I am wondering if it is a press out and press in + deck and hone job.

I really have no idea if it is gonna be a straight forward job or if the block will need more machining.

Thanks again!

I honestly don't think Golden Eagle sleeves would fit in a Darton MID machined block. But then again... who knows?

Just order the sleeves and have it done locally. The only machining should be on the top of the deck.

SD_Lurker: Is this their website?
http://www.vsracing.net/catalog/index.php

I'm gonna shop around for the sleeves. I need to get good rates for shipping as well. Plenty of places seem to be selling them at good prices.

Thanks again!

Icon3 Re: Replacing Damaged Darton MID Sleeves

Hi guys,

Here is some pictures of the block. A local Machine shop in Singapore wants to charge me SGD$1500 just to install the new MID sleeves. I will have to pay for the sleeves separately and they will have to TRY to remove the old sleeves... and charge me for that too.

I don't know if I should go ahead with it or just order a 'New' sleeved block from the US.

I would really like to know the step by step procedure to remove the old sleeves or at least some pictures of the process.

I am sure i will be able to remove the sleeves myself with some effort but I am quite certain I will F@#& up the block.

Please help!

They are only charging that because they have never done it before. Your better off getting another block. I have a local shop that only charges $250labor to replace darton sleeves because the hard work has already been done. But even at that price your spending $500 on sleeves and $250+ labor. Just spend the few hundred more and know its perfect and warrantied.

This will sound extemely getto, but you can also resleeve the sleeves using thin wall replacement sleeves and bring it back to 81mm-81.5mm. Mot ideal but a possible fix in certain situations.

You can individually replace the MID sleeves or all of them. The sleeves are designed to be able to be replaced should you damage them or if you go to the max bore size. This is the same concept used in Top Fuel sleeves and tractor sleeves.

If you are in Singapore you can contact either:

Lim Tan Motor - www.ltm.sg

or

Thrust Technology/Hydra EMS - www.hyrdaems.com

Is there anyone in Australia I can send it to? I trust their workmanship.

I have met the owner of Hydra EMS and will speak to him but again, I don't want to pay more to re-sleeve then it costs to get a 'fresh' block from the states.

It doesn't make sense to me.

I am willing to pay this kind of money to resleeve the block. It makes sense to pay for the labour because the difficult machining has been done. I don't want to pay $1500 just for a deck and hone excluding the sleeve removal price and the price of the sleeves themselves!

I could have 2 new blocks for that money WITH peace of mind that my oil and coolant are not making friends.
