Auto Trans.....Has anyone done it?
Just a curious as a cat question
Why havent there been Honda that has used a AUTO successfully?
Or has there?
Ive seen a bunch of other FWDs using it....Talons...Neons...etc
Even Hondas fastest of the Fast still bang gears

Send a honda auto trans to Shepard with a check for 10g's
Then you'll have a good auto. Otherwise good luck with an auto trans with more then 400whp

Re: Auto Trans.....Has anyone done it?
maybe because it would be 15 grand, and most people feel it takes the sportsman out of it. I don't believe i would like an auto trans. Just about every form of racing out there uses manual shifted in one way or another. I could see a ban on auto trans in a lot of places if it came about. Forcing it into "pro" only type classes.
I can see the future pissing match. Fastest outlaw pass ever....7.499 at 201mph "Yeah but it was on a slush box, smash and go...**** that" "crapomatic, not a real record compared to the original cars" blah blah blah
xtracs are 15 grand, i would much rather just go with that....at that point lol

Too expensive and not much r&d, that's why.
The cars would go a lot faster with an automatic in my opinion, maybe time will tell.

I think its safe to say....the best manual trans we can get is 7500-10,000(depending on bell housing).....an automatic trans of the same caliber will be 15k

That's a drag racing manual gearset offered by a current/used company. It costs $6900.
What's an extra $3k if it will be way more consistent, and faster? In the grand scheme of things, $10k ain't ****. I argue that $10k is no where near what it would take to get the job done correctly, and that's why it hasn't been done.

The point I'm trying to make is your going to spend atleast ten grand and you don't even know if it will work/break etc. you wouldn't even know what gearing to use or what Torque converter etc. it would be trial and error and you'll still lose to the fast guys.

Your spending 10 grand on a built manual trans nobody realizes that. 7k for a gearset 2k for a bell housing also a diff and then assembly. Of it was 10k for an auto that held 1000whp+ I'm sure someone would of done it. **** give me an auto with a trans break I'm all for it!

Re: Auto Trans.....Has anyone done it?
It would make for a hell of a bracket car setup. It would be extremely consistent that's for sure.
I was thinking along the same lines as someone already mentioned why not make an adapter plate to use an already tried and true auto trans setup from another manufacturer?
Only problem I see is with current class rules. I know that IFO rules for most popular classes say that swaps must stay within the same manufacturer. The rule seems to be intended more for the purpose of crazy motor swaps like putting a BBC into a civic but I could see someone interpretting the rule in a way to say a trans setup from another manufacturer falls outside of the class rules. Especially if the person using said setup is successful... Then others tend to get a little butt hurt and complain.

Hondas use a planetary gear set with small clutch packs that is not designed for any kind of power, they fail at stock power levels and people have tried for years and years to build one up and it's just not possible. Sure you could get a little life out of a mild 11 second setup but once you get into the big power setups, it fails almost right away.

It would be much cheaper to just swap a 4g63 motor and trans into a civic versus paying to have an auto Honda transmission built

It'll be ok for the street setup only.

Re: Auto Trans.....Has anyone done it?
I love the fact mines an auto now. I think the converter is finally right so I'm hoping to test at a local 1/8th here soon then after our next race actually make it to a 1/4 track.
My big reason for going auto was lack of a reliable twin for the srt4 and liberty had just released a dogbox but I wasn't gonna drop $5k just to find out if it worked. I stole my auto swap so for me it was an easy decision. Typically for the all out swap its $10-12k though and still not bullet proof.

Given the rotation of the motor is correct (K series or F series from s2000)... the built 3 speed GM Hydramatic 4T65 have held some pretty big power on those turbo ecotec's.

honda auto's dont use a planetary.. they use a constant mesh tranny.. think of a standard manual trans but instead of sliders, syncros and shift forks they have a clutch pack for each gear.
