Default Exhaust back pressure....

Those of you that are monitoring exhaust back pressure, what are you using to dissipate heat from the sensor? I am assuming some SS tuning, -3? XX feet long? Post some pictures of your setup. I have the 5 bar map sensor and am going to weld the bung on the collector, but was curious to see what people are doing to extend sensor life in their mounting locations and distances.

Thanks

This is what we use. It dampens the pulsations in the system and helps keep the heat from the sensor. We build them in house. The current ones are SS, that's an older one that's coated. 1/8NPT in/out. Pressure in from the manifold on one side and the pressure sensor on the other side.

If you don't do a damper like that then you'll get a real jittery signal from all the pulsations in the manifold. You get a nice smooth signal this way.

Looks like an oil pressure line kit for a mechanical gauge. Except the Autometer and VDO kits Ive bought from Napa are twice the price.

[EDIT] I was talking about the one on FCS's website.

You can purchase that through Tony or build your own with a snubber from Mcmaster. I used copper tubing and made a spiral to help buffer the pulses and reduce heat. You can use a snubber or jam pack a bunch of steel whool in a cylinder with fittings on it too.

Would this be ideal on a All-motor setup as well?

True, heat does cause it to become brittle over time. Excessive pressure can cause it to rupture as well. Just keep on the lookout over time....

Or use steel tubing.

Tony/Ricky,

You have any pictures of that installed? Curious to see the whole routing and length of the tubing, etc.

I've seen a old summit fuel filter used how Tony is doing it also.they removed inside filter and welded new bungs on the ends and weld cap shut..looked nice after they got powdercoated.

5 bar sensors. And I believe it needs to be equal or close to boost presure.

I use a 5 bar on mine. In theory you want as close to 1:1 as possible.

so if its not close to 1:1 what issues would be causing the problem?

basically what i'm asking is why do you run this?

Restriction. An engine is a pump and you're just looking to measure the efficiency of it.

so to tune back pressure what types of changes are made to gain and reduce pressure? im sure different a/r exhaust housings are probably the main thing? would cam timming and cylinder pressure be causes of to much or to little? waste gate size, placement?

so after we measure the efficiency, then what? can someone go into detail as to how you would gain a more "balanced" ratio? what would high exhaust back pressure cause?

A high back pressure in the turbine housing can cause, the turbine wheel to slow down. it can cause unwanted stress & thrust load on a wheel & shaft & possible damage to both if excessive or if the turbo is not up to par.

Also excessive back pressure can lead to poor engine power, high egts, etc. it can in some cases reintroduce spent exh gasses back into the motor depending on cam degree & overlap.

Like tony said, the lower the better.

Proper turbine housing & properly sized exh wheel is needed. It depends on displacement, desired rpm operating area, and desired power.
