Race Head, Web Cams, degreeing and advice needed
Hey guys got alil crazy and dropped $2500 on the Web Pro Series cams.

So short to say I haven't been sleeping well... I will be updating this Thread throughout the Install and up till the car is running(hoping within a month). I'm planning on just buying a cheapo summit racing degree kit as that should work fine. Over the past few days I have been going crazy researching how to check all clearances and degree the cams. From what I have found most cam makers supply a Cam Card with there products. Witch tells you where the Center Lines should be in relation to the degree wheel. All that came with this setup was a paper "HIGHLY RECOMMENDing me to check clearances and I must Degree the Cams in". That's great and all but, when I find the Center Lines and Lobe Separation Angles etc with Cam Gears zero'd, where do I take them from there??? Why even bother degreeing the cams if i'm not told were to put them? I don't understand this. Or maybe there is something i'm missing? 2nd. Web requires Springs with atleast 85lbs seat Pressure. http://i833.photobucket.com/albums/z...d8eaa400d0.jpg My Skunk2 Pro Series setup only has 80lbs seat pressure. Which should be fine I'll just need to check clearances and shim accordingly. However my plan is to just break in the cams using these springs and then upgrade to skunk2 Extreme Pressure Spring 93lbs Seat Pressure. I have read alot and am wondering if I shouldn't maybe even take the Inner Spring out and maybe even remove the Windage Tray so more Oil gets to the Head?<Good Idea, Bad Idea or just totally unnecessary? Also I will ask this question just in case someone who has used cams like this chimes in. I will find the answer to this question when I get home and check clearances regardless. But, do these JE Pistons look compatible with these Cams? I'm worried the Valve Reliefs may not be deep enough. Where do I degree these cams to? Also I have Skunk2 Springs/Retainers and Ferrea Valves. I have heard that this is not a good combo? Or atleast that Skunks Keepers shouldn't be used with Ferrea Valves. Any Merit in this? Sorry if any of my questions are rediculous, I have tons of money tied up in this and don't want to fuck this up!! |

How are you checking seat pressure? Are you actually measuring the installed height yourself or are you just looking at the manufacturers spec? Because you are mixing and matching parts your installed height might be a bit different than what the manufacturer has spec'd out for seat pressure. Not all valves are the same, and neither are retainers.
I would call Web for the info you need to degree the cams, I dont know why they wouldnt be able to give it to you. I've ran into that problem with other manufacturers as well. |

Yea, i'm just going off skunk2 specs. I have a height mike but it wont work with this head. If someone has a part number or method for checking installed height on these heads please let me know. Thanks for those specs. Where did you find them? I called Web and talked to Alex, he was very helpful! I will be home in a few days I can't wait to get home to play with these some more.

I use the same cams with JE 10:1 shelf pistons and it's not a problem

So I completely tore the head down. Except for the Guides. Did a minor port job that I think came out great. I have 3 questions now.
1st. Should I replace the Cam Cap bolts? I have seen problems with 20year old Bolts and have heard that replacements from the dealer aren't much better. On older models they waaay outsource to whoever will make their shit cheapest. Are there any aftermarket cam cap bolts that anyone knows of Grade 10 or better? 2nd. Valve Guides. Does anyone know a good method for removing these things and putting them back in? To get the out do I drive them out towards the combustion chamber. This is my first time working inside of an engine changing/clearances and I don't wan2 fuck it up. I honestly have no clue which direction I should be driving these things?? 3rd. Measuring Valve installed height. I have not gotten around to working on this as i'm still in the process of teardown, not install. But, i'm out of town working again bored and can't think of how I would do this. Height Mic wont fit, a regular Caliper Micrometer might not be very accurate. The only thing I could think of is, use the bottom side of my Digital Caliper. Measure the Retainer and subtract that from my total. Someone has got to know of a brand of height mic that will work on our Bseries heads... |
