scratched windshield
while attempting to rid myself of watermarks on my windows i have aquired small swirl scratches from the product i used. what can i do to fix this at a reasonable cost? wax?

Re: scratched windshield
What 'product' did you use? You may have etched the glass. Wax would probably not help. On a side note, I have used automotive paint cleaner (part of a waxing/polishing kit) from Meguiars and did a fairly good job.

i had the same problem and i could not get them out. so i just cracked the front glass on purpose and got a free replacement. lol.

you can usually level scratches with a cerium oxide slurry and glass leveling pads. the key points are to avoid getting the glass hot and to not polish too much in any one area. |
Re: scratched windshield
Hmm, I've got a similar problem. I think during a tint removal the installer's razor blade light scraped the glass causing a shallow scratch barely visible. However when you apply tint on top of it it magnifies the scratch like crazy.
I'm wondering if some polish or something would take care of it? |

I'm wondering if some polish or something would take care of it? it really depends on how deep it is. it's very possible to level a very shallow scratch, but the deeper it gets, the higher the risk for developing a wave or distortion in the glass. |
Re: scratched windshield
Gotca, it's very very difficult to see if you're just looking at the glass from the outside, however running your fingernail up and down the glass you will catch it just a touch. I've considered getting replacement glass but I'm lazy :P and figured I might be able to polish it out. It's only about 3 inches long anyways.
Any suggestions though built? Will the cerium oxide paste help? I've seen some stuff that can "temporarily" reduce the appearance of them, it was like a mix of iron oxide and some other compounds. I'm not sure though if I could tint over that and have it look normal. |
Re: scratched windshield
it's on the inside or outside? i'm figuring the outside since tint is cut on the outside.
hard to say for sure. i believe it to hinge mostly on how deep it really is. the only evidence i've seen of scratches being removed is with a buffer and that cerium oxide. i've never done it - the most i've done is removed minimal to severe water spots from glass on many vehicles. here is a dude who used it with great results - http://www.autogeekonline.net/forum/...h-remover.html apparently the process is very messy. like i said the fear is making the glass distorted and/or if the scratch is even able to be removed. but if you have a buffer, it might not hurt to try. autogeek sells some diamondite kits meant for scratches. David Fermani, who is a well-respected detailer in florida, mentioned at one point he had a friend who would travel the country removing scratches on classic/exotic car glass. so, apparently there are pros out there who specialize in this. |
Re: scratched windshield
Appreciate it built, found this linked in the thread
http://www.autogeek.net/glass-repair-kit.html Think this might work for me and looks relatively straight forward. It's actually a scratch on the inside of the glass, I had some tint removed for awhile and probably should have just done it myself. |
Re: scratched windshield
are you sure your glass is "scratched"?
