1985 Porsche 911 Carrera Gets restored by Tru Shine Detailing of Knoxville TN

Hey Everyone,

This was a restoration type detail that I was excited to get my hands on. I am such a big fan of these old school Porsche's and when this owner called me to come out and look at it, I was right on it. Once I inspected the car I knew right away the potential that it had. We scheduled the car and two weeks later I arrived.

This write up documents the process and products used to revive this 1985 911 Carrera. Lets get this going.

Here is the car when I arrived

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pse1d3a01f.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps8f6c257f.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psfb59d720.jpg

Lets start with the wheels. One of my favorite wheel cleaners is P21s wheel gel. It is a pH balanced wheel cleaner safe and any wheels, painted, polished, clear coated... any wheel.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psaf729d8b.jpg

And another Favorite for cleaning the wheels is the EZ Detail Brush and Wheel woolies.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps0b74581a.jpg

After the wheels I pre-rinse the paint to knock off any heavy and loose debris

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps2472327b.jpg

After the pre-rinse, I then give the car a foam bath. The foam bath is very functional, and not just for show. When the foam is applied to the surface it acts as a suspension for the dirt and also gives the surface lubricity. all of this helps keep your car swirl free.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps0e665d86.jpg

After washing the car, I brought it inside to inspect the paint under good lighting. this shows the tru surface and lets me know what I'm dealing with.

here are some pics under halogen lights which imitates what you would see under direct sunlight. the paint was very swirled and oxidized.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps79bb2b7f.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps35cf94e1.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps348194f2.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psbe655128.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psc1d018a8.jpg

21 years of crust and residue build up around the emblems

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps4577fefb.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps47cfd850.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps1c70f8bc.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps947768dd.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps56ed79bd.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psd1f587c0.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps5f9bacfd.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps5dd8606e.jpg

So I finally got to work on the paint and begin the revival.

here is a picture of how much oxidation was removed.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps33a7479a.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psc362fcb5.jpg

Here is a before of the passenger door handle.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psf05a574f.jpg

And here is the after

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psc0f1fc0e.jpg

Rear Quarter Panel Before

Rear Quarter Panel After

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psd0e24694.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pse0c65967.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psabad2036.jpg

For this next part, I noticed the emblem had 20+ years of crud built up around it, so I decided to remove the emblem to clean it underneath.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pscee1e0a1.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psb3fd11df.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psfb19900a.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps47b9e71e.jpg

While making my way around the car, I found myself at this faded whale tail wing in the back. I knew that I could bring it back, so I taped off the surrounding areas and began to revive the paint

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psa06dd539.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pse4c69f7f.jpg

I also decided to paint the faded back air vents

here is a 50/50

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps8b7d3ec9.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps3da3083b.jpg

and here was the final outcome

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps6a813908.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps086a70ea.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps0e83a8b5.jpg

Here is another before and after of the Driver Quarter

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...pse872ada5.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psea08ea29.jpg

On this door, not only did I polish out the scratches, I touched up the chips on the edge too.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps7759fb86.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psbf43d0ea.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps3295d044.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psd465c208.jpg

These pictures are up close of what actually happens in Tru paint correction. The clear coat is leveled out removing the defects and not hiding them with glazes and waxes

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps645ec5e5.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps4aeeab6d.jpg

Now for all the faded trim and plastics, I used a product that is a nano crystalized coating that has 1-2 years of protection for the rubber, plastic trim pieces, Gtechniques C4.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psa7b3b7d7.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps72552ebb.jpg

After all of that was done, I decided to revive the wheels by polishing them out and coating them with Poorboys wheel sealant.

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps6751989a.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psdddea4cd.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps596db58f.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...ps75782d30.jpg

http://i87.photobucket.com/albums/k1...psfb0e9d72.jpg

Now that the car was finished, lets see what it looks like outside and in the sun.

Amazing work, I always look forward to your threads, I have learned so much from reading them. A few questions though,
1. how did you remove and reapply the emblem on the back?
2. how did you paint the vents on the tailgate?

Great restorative detail, corrected all original paint is so much better than new paint in my opinion...

i believe that's actually finger nails that caused those scratches.

Great turn around! Original single stage paint you were working with right? How did the interior look on that car?

So, the 'key' to a premium shine is in the polishing of the paint to correct the imperfections.
Consumer Report found none of the 19 wax products tested were good enough to be Rated excellent, with most showing signs of deterioration within a few weeks.

They also noted: Thanks to today's clear-coat finishes, our testing shows that even the best wax will probably not improve the shine on a new car. Regular washing is still the most important step to protecting your car's finish. But a coat of wax can add a layer of protection against tree sap, bird droppings, and other contaminants--at least for a while.

So, I guess I won't be spending $80.00 on an 8 oz jar of Zymol car wax.

Correct, scratch free paint is what makes a car shine. Wax adds a bit of depth to the shine.

i hate to ask and you, and you can answer in PM if you want, but how much would I be looking to spend to do the same treatment, albeit my 20 year old honda.

I'd rather save the paint than repaint.
