they aren't quite the classics as some on here, i wonder why they have never had much of a following. as classic honda enthusiasts what are you impressions when you think Prelude?

i personally have had an 85 forever. my mom bought it new and always intended for me to have it. now 29 and been driving it since i was 16, though it's seen better days at the moment. i had originally completely redone the car with paint, suspension, interior and a motor swap to the 89 accord LXi engine, getting rid of the dual sidedrafts.

now after it was hit, i have stripped out the interior to make it a track car. though i very regretfully never got pics of the interior .
i do want to find another and make it a clean example of the 2gen though someday (mildly modded).

anyway, the cars are light, fun to drive, and very comparable to a crx imo, yet they were always in the background.
if only honda had brought them to the US with the B20A's in them

I always thought the Prelude was a good looking car (well, except for the 1st Gen 'lude).

But the USDM Prelude was always a biot too heavy and soft to be considered a "sporty" car. More looks than acutal performance. Swaapping in the Accord stuff was a help, I am sure, but still not exactly a "world beater."

Stripped to the bone and built for racing, I am sure your Prelude will be fun on the track.

more underpowered than heavy i think. though the 5gen was plain heavy.

my car stock 100hp with the carbs was rated at mid 17's 1/4 mile
with the LXi motor (20 more hp) i ran a 15.9.
if that B20a motor had been available in the 2gen like it was everywhere else they could have been in the low 15's/high 14's area.

I love the older preludes. I saw a picture a while back of a black one sitting on black MR5s and wanted one. My brother had one but rusted away. Prety cool car in my opinion. My Theory is, since they were a more upscale, and more heavily optioned car, the lower runt cars, (civics and crxs) had to band together as purists maybe. It's kinda like even though the 280ZX-300ZXs sold more cars in numbers, the earlier less optioned 240-280Zs have more of a cult following. As I was told by a Z owner, my ZX was a boulevard cruiser.

Love the older ludes (2nd, 3rd gen) Our mechanic owns a 87 Si, ran a HMT setup (custom log exhaust manifold) @7psi. He cranked up the boost and blew the engine, and is now putting it back together with forged rods/pistons and better fuel managment.

ya you have to make them obd1, but the stock head gasket is horrible. there are some that had custom gaskets made for boost but i dunno if there are any left floating around.

I would love to restore a 2nd gen ..or even a 3rd. I also have had a 4th gen for many years. I love it and hope to have it forever.

There's a pretty good Prelude following on preludepower.com and other prelude sites out there.

Love'em but I'm a prelude guy. Had a 2nd gen (87 base), 3rd gen (91si), currently own a 4th gen (94si), and am looking to buy a 5th gen
Every one I've had has been a blast. Part of the reason I like them so much is they are just rare. I see so many damn accords and civics - but a nice prelude is a rare find. Great cars.

I am the second owner of my 87 Prelude....I was imported from Germany by the original owner. It is registered and I drive it all the time. The 160HP B20A does make a huge difference.




Part of the reason you don't see as many of these still around was the fact not many were sold. During the 80's the foreign car manufacturers were restricted (by the U.S.) as to how many cars they could bring into the US(part of the reason Honda started making Hondas here in the U.S.). Also, remember that the Prelude was the most expensive of the Hondas at that time.

not a huge fan of the prelude but i dig that hatch in the one picture. there was a post on here somewhere with a guy that had a (i think) 78 or 79 with the fender mirrors and all that rhd he imported it and was the original owner. im pretty sure he was trying to sell it. if i find the post ill link it up. it was a cool car because of the rarity and all.

I have never really understood it. Ive owned 2 preludes, 88 Si with 4WS(4 wheel steering) and that was a BLAST to drive. I also owned a 98 Type-SH which back in the day could own almost anything on the street. I guess the prelude is hondas red headed step child lol. bump for preludes!
