Re: S600 Coupe Off frame restoration
We lifted the body off the frame today. The half ton mobile hoist easily lifted the body which seemed only about 250kg. The chassis was just rolled away on the skate. The running gear complete with exhaust system looks good on the frame. Will look better cleaned up. There isn't too many cars you can do that to.

Hey there. Sorry I was never able to get you a copy of the shop and parts manuals on CD. I knew I had a copy, but it somehow managed to misplace it. However, I do have original manuals, that I could scan certain pages from. If you want to let me know which pages you need, I'd be happy to scan them for you.

Re: S600 Coupe Off frame restoration
First of all, can you check that your page 191 is the same as above. No point talking page numbers if we don't have the same book. Then I don't have a cover image or any pages before the Contents page. Thats why I don't know what I have got. Missing pages 42 and 43 (transmission),page 237(suspension system). I think thats all.
So if you can scan and email me those 3 pages and a cover image, that would be great.
Cheers,
John

Removed the water pump today to check if it is leaking or seized. It had a build up of crap in it but it turned OK and the seals seemed OK. I will clean it up more later when I dismantle the engine but for now it is good to go for a basic engine test.

Re: S600 Coupe Off frame restoration
Sorry I have just found a S600 Coupe that I was about to shove a 4.3 V6 Chevy Blower Motor into. I have not purchased the car yet I talked to the guy yesterday and found out what it was. I thought it was a Fiat or something ( NO DISRESPECT MENT ) I have just never seen one. So here I am doing research and see it is a very rare car. What is it worth and what should I do. It already has a Datsun 4cyl/manual trans/Regular rearend, it is left hand drive, there is alot of rust in the rocker sills, the hood scoop has been modified, everything else appears factory and in good condition , he claims it will run ,but couldn't get it started ( Datsun Motor Doesn't Matter ) , VIN AS285C-1001394 , HELP ME MAKE A DECISION! Hopefully before I chop it up into a Rat Rod.

DJtiwguy, Can you get some photos? Are you in USA? Left hand drive cars were less common. Not sold in USA. Even Jay Leno's car is a right hand drive version. Maybe worth bringing back to original. Check out the S600 registry website there are original engines around.

John, my page 191 is the same as the one you have, so we must have the same book. Just let me know what pages you need, and I'll be happy to scan them for you.

Let's hope most of the rest of the task is as easy for you as getting the body off. Don't be shy about posting here when you run into a problem, as I'm sure you will.

I needed to repair the treads in the carbys with "helicoils". Some previous genius had used 1/4" witworth screws in M6 threaded holes and stripped them out. All good now. Cleaned them up enough for a test run and got them back on the engine.

Re: S600 Coupe Off frame restoration
Got the starter motor turning the engine over and pumping the oil up to the cylinder head.

Got the distributor cap on, a coil connected to the battery, and the spark plugs lined up on a coat hanger wire.

Next is a fuel supply!

Re: S600 Coupe Off frame restoration
The threads in the carbs are a bit of an issue with these cars. For those following this thread who don't have an S-car, the gas line from the fuel pump goes into a fuel distribution block which is removed in the top pictures above and then appears in the ones below as a kind of extension to the carb throats. The fuel block is held on by the eight long bolts that can be clearly seen end-on in the fourth picture down of the last post.
These eight bolts have to hold the fuel block tight to the carbs in order to prevent raw fuel from leaking into the carb throats. The car will run at revs with small leaks but won't idle properly. The problem is that the carb bodies are quite soft, so there's a fine line between getting them tight and stripping the threads out. I'm guessing most carb sets out there have at least a couple of helicoils.

Re: S600 Coupe Off frame restoration
We got fuel to the carbys via a gravity feed line and a small funnel attached to a length of rod to hold it up. The engine fired immediately and ran for about 10 seconds before I filmed this clip. Some of the smoke will be from the WD40 I sprayed in the bores to help lube the rings.

The engine idled for another 5 mins. filling the shed with smoke until I shut it down. The transmission is not in gear but still rotates the prop shaft due to a little bit of friction.
Thanks Bob for your input, your knowledge will be invaluable.

I have recieved a CD with the shop manual and parts manual and owners manual. Thank you, very much appreciated. I shall put that to good use.
