my New 86 Accord LXI
I just bought a 1986 Honda Accord LX-I.
Its a 5 Speed, 286K miles, not sure whats going on with the motor, it runs like its got 50k on it. Theres no oil leak, no miss, no feeling under powerd, no smoking, and im sure it will bang the rev limiter all day long if you let it. I was actually suprised how quick it was when i first got on it.
Owner Said he doesnt know if it has had a rebuild, or a new motor put in it, doesnt look like it has had either done.
Its the 2.0L Single Cam F-I, the A20 I think? its pretty quick, it has Cold-Air Intake, A\C Delete, Full Exhuast, NGK Plugs + Wires, etc. Interior is Stripped. raced a Scion TC with I\E and it kept up pretty well.
anyways.
I'm gonna do a few things on it, pull the oil pan, and the valve cover, see what the condition of the internals looks like.
if it doesnt look too good, ill probably rebuild it, or dump it when it dies, and drop in another A20, or swap in the B20A
I was wondering if anyone knows how much boost both of these motors hold stock? I' figure the general rule which is 4-8 PSI. Does anyone on here have a Turbo Accord of the same Gen with the B20A or A20?

good luck with the B20A, there are no standard trans to be found anymore.
the engine is a closed deck iron block. put pistons and rods in it (custom) and give it all the boost you want.
and go to 3geez.com

Re: my New 86 Accord LXI
actually i made the mistake of saying it was a 86, went to register it today and title said 89, so idk where i got 86 from.
it is the 12 valve which makes 120hp\122tq. and its newer then 87, and 88-89 L-Xi's had the 12 valve.
Pulled the valve cover off (and it was indeed the 12 valve), and the oil pan....everything is a nice light gold color so the motor has been rebuilt very recently, or is fairly new.

Re: my New 86 Accord LXI
if it is indeed an 89, then you have the 120hp motor (though it probably doesnt make even close to that anymore). They were all 12 valve, the difference is in the manifolds. The intake manifold on the 88-89's is dual stage, and (correct me if im wrong here) the exhaust manifold is 4-2-1. On the 86-87, its 4-1 and a normal intake manifold.

im pretty sure its still close to factory spec power, like i said, when i opend the motor up, it looks pretty clean and new, so im sure it around there. and it still runs like a brand new motor.
and it also has I\E, ignition, and a\c deletion.
I went to the Junkyard today and found a a20a3, and pulled the cam out of it, I'm gonna ship it off next week and have it reground. in the mean time, i am gonna weld up some headers, pull the cat off, bolt in a straight pipe, and prob pick up a new muffler.
i also picked up a remanufactored alternator that was on the same accord i pulled the cam out of, so i went ahead and replaced mine, along with new thermostat, i also changed the oil and flushed the coolant, and put a new oil filter on.
clutch feels a little iffy tho, so i think im gonna try and get a new one, but it will be aftermarket. while Im' down there i think I'm gonna go ahead and replace the rear main seal for good luck
EDIT: now that i think about it..im gonna go back to the junkyard and get the head, im gonna clean it, and rebuild it. I will probably get new valves, and throw some titanium valve springs on there. I will also port and polish the head.

prob like 100$ or so. idk last time i made a header it was a ram style turbo manifold for my dsm, and it was like 125$.
That includes welding materials.
cutting discs
grinding discs
band saw blades
and metal.
Speaking of DSM's, I'm thinking about trading my accord for a DSM, I miss mine; but my buddy refuses to sell my Turbo 1.8L DSM back to me cause he loves the damn thing. I don't blame him. Who knows tho, maybe I'll get a steal on a 2.0L Turbo\Non Turbo AWD\FWD DSM. I would love a AWD DSM, just so I could do a RWD Conversion

I dunno why you say that there are no standards around anymore....cuz there everywhere. The B20A came in the 88-91 ludes so there 5 speeds are everywhere. Assuming thats the B20A your reffering too.

Re: my New 86 Accord LXI
Totally different B20. The B20A we are referring to is the JDM/EDM B20a that came in 86-89 Accords.

Yes I do love working on cars actually Its my Passion, Hobby, and sometimes Career
if your implying that DSM's are unreliable I don't know why you say that.
its the 7-bolt 4g63 Turbos that brake down alot (93-94 Plymouth Laser, 93-99 Eagle Talon, Mitsubishi Eclipse)
6-bolt 4G63's only have a problem with jumping timing or broken timing belts, and thats because of timing belt not being tight enough, or just not being replaced when it should be.
allow me to explain with reliability ranks of the engines in DSM's
1st: 1.8L 4g37
2nd: 2.4L 4g64
2nd: 2.0L 6 Bolt 4G63 N\A
3rd: 2.0L 6 Bolt 4G63 Turbo
4th: 2.0L 7 Bolt 4g63 N\A
5th: 2.0L Chrysler 420A
6th: 2.0L 7 Bolt 4g63 Turbo
and i have a 4G37 N\A, which is the MOST reliable DSM motor you can get, Timing belt brakes on this car, slap a new belt on, and your good to go, because its a NIM (Non Interference Motor) so no bent valves. not to mention it can also hold much more boost stock then most Honda's
if you ask me, Honda's need more work then DSM's just because you get these kids who think they have race cars, and beat the living **** out of them all day and night.

Yes.
so many people think Honda's are the fastest thing on earth, and then go around beating the living hell out of them day after day. this is a major aspect of what I consider a modern day rice burner to be.
