Just Got an 85 Civic...Help?
Just picked up an 85-86 civic 1.5L carbureted 4spd.
It has 89K original miles
It is in FANTASTIC condition.
Sat in some persons yard for 4 years+.
Fired right up. Alternator belt snapped on start-up, but it runs!
I know NOTHING about hondas, ESPECIALLY carbureted ones.
Have some tips for me?
As of right now, it will stay completely stock as I only want it for work, and while my mazda is getting a motor swap in it...I needed something to drive in the meantime.
But for sake of interest...if I wanted to add a cold air intake. Just to clean up the look in the bay, and give it some better gas mileage....Can this be done? Again, I know nothing about carbureters.
Thanks.
-Daniel
Here are some photos of the Civic:

you won't be able to run a "cold air intake" like you could on a FI car because the lack of a throttle body but it is possible to create a custom unit but not advisable because of the low pressures in a carb you don't want a filter on the end of a tube like the average CAI you are going to want to run a setup basicly like an old muscle car with the filter still close to the car but a intake pipe or pipes drawing colder air out side of the engine bad and any of these option wont nessicarily (sp) give you better gas mileage or at least noticibly better honda has always been very efficiant with their intake setups but you may get a deeper throttle noise and clean the engine bay up a bit but congrats on the nice pick up and maybe one day you will finally get out of the mazda for good

Hmmm... can't see the photos.
85si is right. Carbs are different than what most people are familiar with on throttle-bodied intakes. You could make your own open element air cleaner using an aftermarket 10" air cleaner assembly and cutting it to fit the stock air cleaner base. I've seen several people with this setup, and it looks very nice and surely breathes better. I would be doing this with mine, but going all out and doing a bike carb conversion.
Nice find. I had a similar story with my 85 1500S. It sat in the yard of two different owners over 4 years without running because the timing belt had broken and neither guy knew how to change the belt and valves. I put in about $100 in parts, and it fired right up. Gotta love a Honda.
