Default honda civic 82 - fuel issue

I've been looking at an 82 civic that has sat for a bit. We are able to start the engine - , The engine runs when fuel is gravity fed to the carb.

I'm looking at the fuel pump. Is there a diaphragm that can be replaced ? or does the whole pump have to be? - I have looked through a bunch of sites for some replacements, is there a good resource anyone knows of ?

This is not my car .... yet . I think If I take the pump off to inspect I am going to need gaskets to put it back on .... ? Should I do this ?

I'm having similar problems (83 1300FE). My car ran fine when parked last summer, it sat all winter, and when I got in to start it this weekend, no go. My first thought was fuel pump as well, check the fuse, it's good. Luckily I had a spare pump sitting around, so I disconnected the pump on the car, and just loose connected the spare pump, hit the key, no pump action (mind you, the spare pump does work, as I tested it on a battery and it worked). Second test was to test the car's pump. I wired it direct to a battery, and it also works.

So now I'm looking into the electrical, I don't know if it's in the wiring, a relay, or what.

If your pump is the same as mine, the pump comes right off, if you take it off to inspect it's just a matter of disconnecting the hoses, wiring, and bolts that hold it in place.

The pump relay works off tach signal. So if the engine isn't turning over, the pump won't activate. Just turning the key on probably won't trigger the fuel pump at all. You need to be actively turning the engine over, and the coil has to be firing.

I had the car running off of starting fluid, do you happen to have a wiring diagram perhaps?

I have a 83 1300 and had a similar problem. I removed the fuel cut relay in fuse box. Make a jumper out of 2 spade terminals and wired it direct. That relay is very touchy and only works when it wants to. We were left stranded twice and i decided to punt the relay.

I think it is only there as a safety device. It engages the fuel pump only when the oil pressure sender sees pressure according to the Haynes manual. I have not had a problem since wiring around it.

Good info, I'm gonna bypass the fuel relay and see what happens.
