Grinding noise in my '87 CRX SI
Ok, this one has me stumped. I've got a '87 CRX SI, with 278k miles. I have noticed a mild grinding sound from the front end that gets louder up to about 40mph, then stays that volume up thru the speed range.
The car has a new clutch (rear main, and throw out bearring) new front wheel bearings, and new brakes but still makes the noise.
Odd thing is, it gets louder on left turns, and goes away with right turns...
Any ideas?
Richard

The 87 CRX HF I have now had a similar problem. Former owner never could figure it out. One day he backed out of the driveway and kerblam ! The car wouldn't move and he couldn't figure it out till he looked under it closely.
The left ball joint had failed and the lower arm fell into the tire rim. Turned out his daughter had hit a pot hole hard a year or so before and chose not to mention it. It had been a squeeking creeking sound.
Both ball joints were replaced along with the arms they come mounted on and the problem was cured.

Re: Grinding noise in my '87 CRX SI
ball joint failure on these cars is pretty common, but it wouldn't match the noise he is describing. something is wrong on the right side of your car. reason being is that when you turn left, it puts more pressure/weight on the right side components. when you turn right, it is vice-versa. i would start with the wheel bearings also. it may be the rear ones, too. but it would still be the right side based off your observations.
