CRX '86 Cooling problem :S
Hey guys I've been going through hell with my rex lately... Well my highest priority for this car is to fix the fast heating issue here... I've been looking around how to resolve my problem, but I can't seem to find my matching problem anywhere...
Here's the problem, my thermostat broke even i bought a new one just like a month ago ridiculous right? well it's been running without a thermostat for almost a week. I have like air bubbles in my cooling system which I TRY to keep it from getting air bubbles! Before all this having a problem, I added coolant in my reservoir to the max line and fill up the radiator and burp it... I drive it around it seemed to keep itself running cool, well, then like approximately 2 hours of driving, my car started getting hot again, found that I have air bubbles in my cooling system again... Then in reservoir tank it's filled up to where it can't hold anymore coolant. There's another problem I find that when driving around and knowing it's hot I have turned on the heater full blast it was blowing cold air?! I don't know what this could be?? Thank you for taking your time reading this... response would be very appreciated!

Re: CRX '86 Cooling problem :S
It can't be burning either or leaking I see no signs of it leaking, it's a rebuilt EW1 engine (stock engine; not rebuilt by me so it has around like 50K miles on it already) I realized I am in a wrong section of this forum (it's 1986), though still falls under CRX model...

well first replace the thermostat, you can also get your cooling system tested for leaks. you may have a pinhole in one of your hoses...
if your still getting cold air while your car is hot you either have a bad waterpump or air in the sytem...bleed it properly.
you can also do a leak down test to see if your head gasket is shot, but repeated overheats can also cause your headgasket to eventually give out.

Unless you're noticing a major coolant leak, the head gasket is bad.
Replacing the thermostat won't solve the problem. The engine is consuming coolant, which is why the heater runs cold (coolant level is low), and it's pushing combustion pressure into the cooling system, causing coolant to run into the overflow bottle and creating air bubbles in the system.
Have the coolant tested for presence of combustion gases (carbon monoxide). I can guarantee you the test will turn up positive.

Okay, I am pretty sure it's a head gasket now, though I would try to get the coolant tested for too see if there was carbon dioxide/monoxide. Thank you all for the response! I will respond back to you guys when I get this problem resolved! =]

Okay, I'm back with the updates, I replaced my head, I found that I have a blown gasket and, cams are pitted and valve guide is shot, and some water was actually going into the combustion chamber as I saw white/brown oil in the valve cover cavity... Well I'm getting my cams redone and put in new valve guides and gasket. Thanks for pointing out about the head gasket problem!
