Check Engine Light at High Speeds 91 civic
1991 Honda Civic SW(Station Wagon)
Ive owned this car for over 3 years and my father owned it for 10 before me.. The check engine light comes on when i reach around 50mph, or when i idle about 3500 rpms for 30 secs. Ive tried to get the code off the computer when idling but it does not come up when the check light comes on.. I recently changed the spark plugs as a friend told me that might be the problem, didnt change... any help on how to find the code or what work i need to do on the car would be very helpful... Thank You
ps, i need to fix this to pass my smog check, also i had a test 3 weeks ago and the hydro carbons PPM was way high, I didnt trust the mechanic, he seemed shady, told me i needed a new cat. he left the sensor out of my muffler during the idle test which leads me to believe he tried to screw me over... could this be true? would that cause my HCPPM to be so high during the idle test?? ill attach a scan of the rusults if that helps...

Hi Benjamin,
I'm not only a smog tech but I own a 88 crx si.
Going by the O2 you need a cat. The cat uses the O2 to lower the HC's and CO's Should be below .3 for both.
Your Check engine light is more than likely for the O2 sensor.
Set your timing to 17 BTDC instead of 19. 18 is your spec.
So timing, cat, and O2 sensor.
After you install the cat, run the car for 30miles before you get it tested again. Also do not turn off the car while waiting for the smog tech to get to it.
