Default '88 Accord Mystery

Hi,
I have a '88 Honda Accord 2.0 Automatic and can't figure out what the problem is...
.. The car starts up every morning but the engine shuts of sometimes
even in the middle of the freeway when I already drove for an hour.
I'm expecting some kind of overheating problem because it happens mostly
when the weather is hot but the indicator is not showing overheating .. temperature is normal.
To continue driving I have to wait 1-2 hours to start the engine back up.

I'm thankful for any useful advise.

Could be a cracked distributor cap or possibly a faulty ignition.

That is caused by a bad distributor. After the electronics get hot in the distributor they don't work properly anymore. When they cool off they work fine. Same exact problem happened to me.

Sounds like the EFI relay. I had the same problem with the same car years ago. Common problem in hot weather in that vintage Accord. Try swapping the EFI relay with another in the fuse box under the hood and see if it starts. If it does, replace the original relay.

The '88 distributor doesn't have a ton of electronics in it. It might be the igniter unit that's going bad. I don't know if it's possible to take it out and get it tested, though, and even less sure if that part is available anymore.

This is definitely the easiest thing to try first. Hopefully it's the cause of the problem.

When it shuts off. Turn the key off, out. Then turn it to the ON position, does the CEL come on for a few seconds and go off? No need to replace parts unless you are pretty sure what the issue is.

I'm back .. thanx to everybody who shared their guesses..
Dropped it off at the shop.. it's most likely the gas pump that is acting up when it's to
gets hot. 160 USD ...
Will let ya know on Monday if it was really that..
.. have a good weekend..
