Default 87 integra not shifting / going in gear

Ok maybe a newb question but I have a 1987 integra it's got a 5sp tranny and when you say shift into any gear the car does move, hesitate, die, or anything. I though maybe the clutch cable was too loose and vie tightened that up but still do move.
Would the clutch be totally out that it would do anything in any gear?

Or something I'm not thinking?

Thanks any help would be great, I lucked out and got this mint condition 5dr teggy and just wanna drive the thing. But wanted to check all options before I pulled the tranny.

Thanks

Justin

check to make sure that the clutch cable is actually working. can you shift the car into gear with the motor off? you should be able to get it in gear then. clutch cable may be snapped.

Yeah definitely can't get the car in gear off or on. I can push the clutch down and see the clutch lever move on the transmission, so I'm assuming all is good there..

Would this be a situation where the cable going into the transmission from the shifter is messed, up? I haven't torn the console apart of jacked up the car yet to look at the underside.. But personally this is the way I'm leaning..

I figured even if the clutch was bad wouldn't I have some sort of grinding when going in gear or something? Or atleast one of the gears would pull the car?

Because when its running no Gear griding occurs, no Pulling in any gear.. Just sits still and acts like its going into gear..

'86 - '89 Integras use a solid bar linkage as opposed to cable, its pretty hard to screw up a 1' piece of steel pipe unless it rusted through or got severely bent on a rock. When you put it in gear and let out the clutch does the speedometer move? If so you have an axle problem, if not you've got a clutch or transmission problem.
