Default 86 Civic 1.5L: Fuel-injected Si vs. carbureted DX

I recently replaced a head gasket for someone on their carbureted 1986 Civic 1.5L.

This guy just found a cherry 1986 Si that needs a motor.

He's asking me to do a swap - put his old carbureted motor into this Si.

The little research I have done suggests that the engines MIGHT be the same (code EW) with different air/fuel delivery.

Can someone here tell me if A) the longblocks are the same, except for manifolds/ecu/fuel/etc. or B) they are completely different.

Can I just take his DX longblock and put it in the Si, utilizing the Si's fuel injection system?

Thanks!

yes the heads are diff but the manifolds use the same bolt pattern. so yes u can install the FI stuff on the carbed head

Default big difference

problem with the carbed head:

The D15A2 EW1 has this wierd freakin auxiliary valve... it's like the predecessor for VTEC. You'll notice some little holes in the carb manifold/cylinder head that are different from the FI version and those go into the auxiliary ports.

The problem is that the auxiliary valves pass a rich mixture from the carb through a narrow port in the head that goes directly over the spark plug and through a hole that's about 1/3" in (maybe smaller, I'm going from memory) diameter and into the cylinder. With the carb this creates virtually perfect flame travel and burns the right amount of fuel every combustion (assuming that your ignition system isn't shitty). With the FI manifold on this head, however, you would get the shittiest flame travel imaginable, no power, misfires and the thing probably wouldn't stay running.

Get an FI head, they're cheap. You could probably even get a VTEC one for nothing.

yeah, cause if you could put a VTEC head on an Si block, someone would have done that already!!!! sorry, different bolt pattern. EW's and D15's (of this generation) don't share ANYTHING with any other honda motor really, except the ZC's and D16's out of the integras of the same era. on that note, you could add a d16a DOHC head, but that's a whole nother story. one that i don't know anything about, except they call it "hydra".. and she's hot!

don't stick a carb'ed motor in there. just not worth it unless it's an absolute must. find another Si or even a teg motor to drop in.

To the original poster of this thread. Does the guy wanting you to do the swap live in Calaveras County? I'm pretty sure he is the fucktard that tried to lowball me for 150.

The d16a1 is the way to go. You can still find them easily, and it's a pretty easy swap. Plus, why butcher one car to get another one going?
