81 Civic Turn Signals

Stopped working a couple of days ago. Hazzards work, but not turn signals. Fuse looks good, don't know much about relays. Any advice? Thanks.

Re: 81 Civic Turn Signals

Common problem to the second gen it seems. It is not the relay or the fuse from my experience. It is a build up of dirt and grease from years of duty.

Since getting an new one is an ordeal, try this:

I removed the steering wheel, and then the covers over the turn signal switch. Spray electrical contact cleaner into the pivot point of the turn stalk. Work the turn lever up and down and spray some more. Keep this up and this will dissolve the grease / dirt that has built up and is causing the issue.

Keep at it, it will eventually start working. In the meantime I am working on trying to retrofit a newer model switch from a more modern Civic or Accord to my 83 1300 Civic. If it works I will definitely post the results.
