1987 crx idle issues
I have a 1987 crx believe is a dx. We rebuilt the motor bout 2years ago and went thru 4 csrburrtors trying to make it idle right. It acts like it wants to shut off when idled to correct speed or sometimes itd fluctuate between about 900 and 1200 alot. I really wanna get the car working right cause it kills me to see it sit. Any ideas what the problem could be? I believe it to be the ecu from some of the site ive read. Pls help!!!

Rebuilt the engine, huh. I bet you get the timing off by a tooth.
Turn the key the ON position and look under the passenger seat. If the LED's are blinking:
X=LED on
O-LED off
XOOO Engine dose not rev-up, high idle speed or erratic idling - Check for a short or open in the crank angle sensor wire. Spark plug wires interfering with the crank angle sensor wire. Also faulty crank angle sensor.
XOOX Same as above (XOOO)

Re: 1987 crx idle issues
I was just searching the forum for info on the same problem Mine is all original except for the belt which I know is right.
Sometimes it runs and operates well and other times it will idle high, around 1500 and won't idle down to 750 or 800 like it should. I drive some distance
and when I come to a traffic light or stop sign it is still idling at 1500 rpms.
Mine is an 87 CRX HF, one of the last made in Japan and has a carb.
It is tuned spot on.
When it runs right I can get 50+ on the high way, but when it acts up like this it draws the mileage down in to the low 40's.
Otherwise the car runs fine and with plenty of power.
Time was when it was new, I could get 60 mpg with the wind behind me.
Sure wish they would make these cars again. A buddy of mine I grew up with can't understand how I still get more miles to the gallon with this car
than he does with his Toyota Prius

2x, dee jsaan if you have a carb, put the wheels on blocks and spray from under, secure the parking brake and put a block behind the wheels...there are a couple of rubber hoses in the low back of the intake manifold, that could be leaking.... I had the problem... and found out when the alternator needed to be replaced... I noticed two larges hoses and one was leaking badly.

"We rebuilt the motor bout 2years ago and went thru 4 csrburrtors trying to make it idle right."
Am i reading this right, you said you went through 4 carburetors, What Carb are you currently running, there is no computer to control ANYTHING in that car if it is infact carb'd and an 87 DX....... so the comment about the ECU light Doesnt help you
Most likely a Vacuum leak, but first id like to know what carb your running..

One thing to consider is the state of the distributor vacuum advance diaphragm... after starting and engine warm, you could try to plug both hoses at the distributor, your idle may be too low and your timing too "retarded", but if the car is running you can change the timing or increase the idle speed and see if the idle is stable.

The CRX carb as a ECU, it has an oxygen sensor, and a spaghetti plate of vacuum hoses to control the amount of air that goes thru the carb... this carb is more a air delivery system.

Re: 1987 crx idle issues
If you had a stock, unmolested DX, it would have had a feedback control unit (a computer). Line 4:

Re: 1987 crx idle issues
I could not find another post here, but someone on this post may be able to help with the issue I am having. I hope so anyway.
I have a 1987 Honda CRX DX, carburetor, that we have cleaned and rebuild the carburetor, but we are not getting fuel to leave the float. So the venturi is not spraying.
I am just curious what the next steps in troubleshooting this would be. It starts, but as soon as the fuel runs out of the carburetor, it cuts off. So the carburetor is not getting more fuel.
Thank you in advance.
