1987 crx dx idle issues
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B8Xw...p=docslist_api
I hope you can see this link. 87 crx dx, carbureted. Just bought it for my 16 year old son. The car doesn't hold an idle. I removed the air cleaner housing and we started the car and it ran for a few minutes but it was putt putting real bad out the tail pipe, and smoking.
Can anyone tell me where to start to make this run healthy? I wonder if it has bad valves or head gasket, or if it is just as simple as doing an valve lash adjustment and maybe getting a new carburetor.
Please let me know if the link to the video works. If not, I will find somewhere else to host it.
Thank you!

Re: 1987 crx dx idle issues
hey i don't know if this is necessarily THE thing to do, but i'll tell you what I'm doing to try to get my 87 sedan running right. I gutted all of the emissions control stuff because it seemed like a crazy mess to try to troubleshoot. the repair manual actually said for some things "if x is faulty, it cannot be replaced" lol. So i put in a weber 36/32 progressive carburetor. This way i can actually tune it and adjust things like mixture, which seem to require special tools to adjust with the stock carb (i.e. a propane enrichment kit). My recommendation would just be to go old school on it. Get rid of all that complicated stuff and learn as much as you can about tuning carburetors. get a vacuum gauge, a timing gun, and a simpler carburetor. then tune it. I learned a heck of a lot about cars this way. This is my first carbureted car, and i'm falling in love with the simplicity of it.

Have you fixed your problem yet? Sounds like it's not firing on all cylinders. If you found something else out, please let the other CRX owners know about it.
Thanks,
Frank
