1987 CIVIC 4 DOOR BEATER

just picked up a 1987 civic 4door for a daily beater, still has the original engine that is carbureted. i know its a daily beater, but if it's cheap enough, i was thinking about just putting a newer engine for reliability, and easier to work on. what are my options as far as just dropping in? D16?

i know i would need engine, wiring harness, ecu, new axles. what else am i in for? sorry if this is a stupid question, haven't ever owned this old of a Honda before, went from 1994 accord, to 2001 Type R, now to 03 Termi, and the civic as a beater.

If you're dropping in a D16 vtec or or not you'll have to do a conversion to MPFI, there are alot of write ups on it, it's fairly easy and straight forward. As far as mounting and hardware goes it's straight forward...

I say u ride it out, save up for an LS.

yeah, not in a hurry, just doing research for if/when it goes down on me. biggest thing i read, that i know NOTHING about, is changing to a pressurized fuel system? so i am doing alot reading. just figured there were some hardcore guys that could get some specific links and what not. i am only a n00b to the older honda's. LOL!

Why not swap in a D (VTEC or not) and run dual weber carbs? That would be fun... -Later, BR

Doing a fuel injected conversion is a lot of work for carb chassis.

Much easier to get a better carberator, or do a custom set off a sportbike with 4 carbs, and freshen up the motor with a hone and new rings.

That EW line of motors responds extremely well to a bigger carb and some clever work with cam timing and some ignition adjustment.

Its possible to squeeze over 120whp with the right carb setup, on a stock block/head

If you can source some parts from an 88-89 integra, they all swap over. Use the motor mounts axles and hubs, shift linkage etc. If you have those you can swap over a d16a1 dohc motor or any d-series motor with that set-up. With the d-eseries motors you need some creativity on the driverside mount. As far as feul injection goes you need a different fuel pump etc. Check out redpepperracing.com, they have tons of info onthese chassis.

if he really wants EFI

he will need to swap gas tanks, grab a fuel pump from the SI models, do a head swap to teh SI head and electronics, and run the si ecu

I don't think it's very straight forward at all.

nope not straightforward at all.. the d16a1 (86-89 integra) is the most direct bolt in you can get. other than that, everything else needs custom mounts/wiring.
