1984 Honda civic wagon 1500 Idles at 3000 rpm help
i just got a 1984 honda civic wagon for free. the guy i got it from said it didnt run and was junk. i towed it and got it started after playing with it for 30minutes. when it runs it starts and goes from 1500 rpms and goes to 3000rpms and stays at 3000 rpms. and then when i put it in first gear it stays at 3000 rpms. the only time the idle goes down is when i hit the brake and the idle starts dropping and the car shuts off. i really like this car. i would love to get this thing runnign right as soon as possible. i also wanted to know if anyone could put up a vaccum diagram so i could replace all the vaccum lines so the chance of bad lines in the future will end. thanks for all your help

After it revs to 3000 rpm, tap the acclerator pedal. It should drop down to 700-1000 rpm.
And your brake booster is bad if the engine is stalling when you press the brakes. You'll need a new one.

thank you for your reply
so what would be the reason for the idle being so high like that
because i want to be able to drive it everyday and make it very nice
this car is going to be my long term project
what else can i do to this car to make it run good
this car has 205,000 miles one it
i cleaned the carb and the idle control valve
Thank you all for your help

It idles high like that to warm up faster, but like I said, all you have to do it tap the acclerator pedal to bring it down.
The best thing you can do to make sure its running well would be to check and adjust the timing to the factory specs and to rebuild the carb.

Re: 1984 Honda civic wagon 1500 Idles at 3000 rpm help
I've got the same problem on a 1980 1300DX. Normally idles at 1000-1100, but often won't go below 3000, for example at stoplights, even though the engine is already completely warm. Tapping the accellerator does nothing.

Hello! I recently purchased an 84 Honda crx and it too idles at 3000 rpm, tapping the gas pedal doesn't help and i've tried going 80 mph for 3-4 mins to try and clear out any lines but it still idles high. Please help =\

The A/C Vacuum Booster is sticking.
Adjust the idle screw at the carb.
Don't turn on the A/C and make sure the A/C is off.
When I turn on my A/C in my Si, idle jumps to 3k and stays there until I adjust the idle screw.

I know it's an old thread but..
If they are carb'd cars, then the (thick) lower rubber carb gasket could be deteriorated leading to a major vacuum leak.
Another thing could be that prev owners may have 'floored' it and if the secondary butterfly was sticking to begin with, it may be slightly open giving the wrong signal (vacuum) to the rest of the carb. Spray some lube in at the linkage and 'work' them back and forth.
Also those 3mi of vacuum lines that are associated with the older carb'd versions.
Some could be cracked (always on the bottom of hose.. Never where you can see it)
Just try a can of carb or brake cleaner with jet nozzle and spray quick shots around the intake, carb base, various vacuum lines..
It should make it bogg or rev up. Either way, you will notice a difference and that's where you can start to de-bug your problem. (ISN"T THIS FUN!!!) That's why I went with dual Mikunis..
And if the booster is leaking THAT much, it could be sucking in your brake fluid too. Check the level often. Or just plug off the booster line and see if the idle comes down. I'd doubt it though.
