1983 Honda Civic 1500 s
 

Hi, I just purchased a 83 honda civic http://www.hondacivicforum.com/forum...es/biggrin.gif w/ aftermarket webber carb.
Drove from the valley to the summit and now having car problems.
I've looked into it and it looks like i need to adjust my carb, but how? http://www.hondacivicforum.com/forum...s/confused.gif

Car starts great, but once i start giving her gas and letting off the rpm drop and she dies. After that, she starts to have trouble starting and when she does, sounds like its choking.

Have you checked spark plugs for fouling and also the fuel filter? These early civic have an aux. valve (intake) that would have rubber seal failure foul the plugs. You can clean existing plugs first and see if it improves. You can go 2 steps hotter on plugs to compensate for oil fouling. Check your fuel filter also(I think some civics even had 2 back then. Eliminate tune up basics first. The aux. valves seals(which you don't have to remove the head) go bad and used to come in to the shop in SF very frequently with these symptoms. They use the same socket as large spark plug. The kit was 10-20 bucks and easier then you might think. But the spark plugs will confirm if this is case by carbon fouling (and cleaning them). Start with basics.

The increase in altitude affected the mixture which is a common thing with carbureted fuel systems. You need to contact with "old school" knowledge regarding making the needed adjustments...

Are you still having trouble? I have a copy of the tuning instructions for my weber two barrel carb that I could post. The instructions are not super clear, but I could also help explain how it works.

It's a very simple process really, just turning a few screws. I've been having to adjust my weber as the temperature changes, once ever 3 months ish. So it's probably best to learn how to do it yourself

Definitely better to learn to adjust it yourself. If you are in CA and have to pass smog, you
may need to readjust it back to original setting where it passed. I would count the turns and write it down. Otherwise the smog shop will probably charge you to adjust it. I used to have to re-tune before and after each test or the carb cars were gutless.

1975 and up. No tape on intakes, CA catalytic converters some $1500 or more.25 years of CA was too much. Still like to visit but Oregon has no smog here. I still burn clean.
