1978 accord issues

So I have a 78 accord CVCC 1.6 5 speed manual, when I bought it it didn’t run due to no spark at the plugs, change the cap, rotor and plugs And she fired up, sat and idled for about 20 minutes so I took it up the street and about 20 minutes later it died, now when I try to crank it smokes comes up out of the carb and it will try to start but coughs and dies back down, what could be the issue? It has 56,000 original miles so I don’t think it could be anything extreme but I could be wrong

The carb needs to be overhauled. Rather than converting to a Weber send the original up to Nowlan's Carb in Spokane WA and ask for Steve.

I hope you get some more suggestions, but I would say start simple, and only move up the ladder if you need to.

First, how old is the gas in the tank? If it's old, drain it and start new.

Second try starting it with starting fluid and clean the carb with GUM-OUT spray -- and add some to the gas tank.

Make sure all connections to the carb are working correctly -- especially the choke. Does gas show up the little, round carb window?

Can you get it started now? If you can make sure the timing, point gap, etc are correct.

If you think the carb is hopelessly clogged, you can remove it and clean it yourself -- you'll need a manual -- or you can buy a rebuilt one (still a good idea to have a manual), or ship it out to be cleaned.

Keep us posted, and use the KISS principle -- and buy a manual.
