Default 1964 Honda S600 "Junkyard Jewel"

Here are some recent photos of my 1964 Honda s600 from Japan. I just bought this car saturday september 22, 2007 from an ex military guy who was going through a divorce and lost his desire to restore the old car. The car needs some parts here and there and definately needs a motor !! enjoy...

Nice car, looks like a good restorable car. I'll do what I can to track down an engine for you.

It seems H-T gets more classic S-car owners each week, lol

Am I reading your VIN tage correct on the engine number: AS285E-000001? If so, your car was the first S600 to have the "updated" S600 engine. Honda first started to number their S600 engines with a 5 digit code (ex. AS285E-XXXXX) up until they changed the engine design where the labled them the way your tag is marked. Kind of neat yours was the first one, to bad it's missing the original engine.

That definetly makes it worth restoring now. It's begging for it!

Here's something you may be interested in for that "drivers side" headlight:

I can help you order this if you end up wanting it to replace yours.

The engine number caught my attention too. It would be worth trying to find and rebuild that engine, maybe going back through the previous owners as far as possible. This is about the earliest S600 I've seen on the internet - #278? - and must be one of the oldest in the country.

Keep us in touch with your progress. It'll be challenging to find the parts, but it sure is nice to see one fall into the hands of somebody with the skills (and the time?) to do a first class restoration.

Not that it really matters, but mine is slightly older, mine's within the first few hundred on the very early 5 digit AS285-64-XXXXX VIN numbering system. Add a about two thousand cars to that, then they changed to the 7 digit AS285-XXXXXXX VIN number, where his is number 278 on that new 7 digit VIN style.

Actually, his car would be S600 number 2,178 to have rolled off the Honda assembly line.

Sorry, I'd forgotten about that first series of numbers (apparently AS2856410005 - AS2856411904). It's still an early car!

Fair abit of work to be done, but it will be well worth it! With regards to the F20C swap, I think it was in smithenhivens thread where he discusses what would be needed make it fit.

What is a complete running honda s600 engine worth?

I'd like to see someone try this swap, and BrokenB20's car could be as good a candidate as any. It's going to be tough to find and repair an original engine, and it probably won't be cheap. The car is no use to an owner without an engine.

My guess, though, is that a swap would have to extend to the entire drivetrain. The S600 parts wouldn't take the power or torque.

Although I'd prefer to see an S600 restored to original, I suppose if it's missing the original engine, as is the case here, then swapping isn't all that bad.

However, I think the F20/2C is a bad choice. This engine is MASSIVE, compared to the S600's engine bay. I'll try to find my long post on why this engine will not work, and repost it here.

I would say if anything, keep it "600" and do CBR600RR engine, that engine alone is probably 2-3 times as much power as the stock S600 engine. If that's not enough power for you, then maybe a CBR1000RR engine.

I always thought it would be neat to run the engine from the Honda F12X Turbo watercraft.

Make a really good attempt to locate an original motor first please.

I believe an F20C swap has been done before in Australia. As smithenhiven mentioned, you'll need to do lots of cutting to the frame to get the F20C to fit. And that's probably the easiest part. You'll probably need to cut out the transmission tunnel to fit a proper tranny in. And then you're looking at a custom rear axle. Those poor chains aren't capable of handling 240-hp.

A 110-hp CBR600 motor swap would be more feasible, but you'll still need to custom-fab stronger chains for the car to stay in one piece. My mechanic suggested that a CBR swap would likely require a dry-sump as well.

If you got the $$$, I say go for it! If you did it to an S800 on the other hand, you would have to be killed for that (although ideally that's the better candidate.
