The bar should point to which ever side is tied to +12V.

ok and do i just solder it to the prong on the relay? or to the clip on the wire?

Are you using connectors? Either location will work its up to you to decide which way best suits your needs. If it were me I would use a plug for the relay. I would connect the diode on the plug. This way when the relay dies you can just swap it out.

I 2nd that. Relay's have a typical life of something like 10,000 switchs or something like that.
