Sub / Amp help...
 

So, I picked up a 1200 watt 12" Kenwood sub in a box.. for 10 bucks. Has a small crack on the cone I'm gooping tmrw. Anyway, what amp should I use? I have 0 experience with audio. Any help is appreciated.

its going in my trunk. 99 4dr.

edit because i forgot ~ can i mount the amp to the sub's box? or will that make it vibrate too hard, heat up, ect?

hmmm use a MTX 801d amp its 800 at 2 ohm but usually subs don't blow amps unless there wired wrong so check your final ohm load before hooking them up, im not a pro but had them too and a friend who works with car audio recommended it and built it in

That Kenwood sub appears to be a 4ohm sub. If you intend to run it at 4ohm, you'll want an amp that does 300 to 400 watts at 4ohm. Maybe try an MTX TD1000.1D. It does 350 watts @ 4ohm and it will do plenty more if you ever get new subs and want to run them to be louder at 1 or 2ohm.

Caution though on the cracked cone. When you fire it up, the crack may slap around and you might be able to hear it or it may leak air which can cause lack of performance or annoying sounds.

dom_35 is right though. You should put a multimeter on the terminals of the sub to make sure it isn't blown and that it is truly a 4ohm sub.

You can measure the impedance of the voice coil by putting the positive lead of the meter on the positive terminal of the sub and the negative lead on the negative terminal. If it is a 4ohm sub, the reading will be AROUND 3.5 to 4.2 ohms. If the reading is all over the place, way higher, or way lower, the sub is blown.
