04 BMW X5 and aftermarket HU
I am lost, tried installing a JVC HU into the X5, no sound.
Used the Metra kit, harness and ant. adapter, tried both speaker level and RCAs, stock amp is getting turn on trigger, but still no sound.
OEM system is a am/fm radioand CD player using an off-board amp multi-channel amp with x-overs built in, [HIFI system, not Bose].
I am pretty sure I have tried everything, even talked to some of the other installers in town, nobody had any suggestions. 94

This is the same radio as the Range Rover. I'm suprised someone would want to swap one out for an inferiour radio. These radios are upgradable to just about every feature you can think of including voice recognition/TV/DVD payback/MP3/ipod/bluetooth for handfree phone....ect,ect. http://www.roverupgrades.com/index.html Your customer is going to lose a lot of features in his X5. To each his own I guess.
They comunicate on the ibus network.
I'm not sure this will help since this is the older version of that radio

I know what you mean, but there is no accounting for taste, it is being replaced to have an AUX input on front of HU.
I will show it to my boss, he is a retired electrical engineer, [spends his time building electric cars], he was not sure what the problem was but had an idea it was in impedance issue with the JVCs outputs.
I will let you know if it works. 94
Thanks.

As for your customer wanting an AUX input that is rather silly since it can already be added to his stock stereo. He could have added a Alpine KCA-410C and had 2 selectable Aux inputs from the factory stereo (menu items automatically added). I'm interested in pictures once your complete. I can't imagine tearing out my stock radio. Its by far better then most of the stuff out there and offers many more features. He tearing out about $6k worth of equipment for a $500 JVC lol !! I just spent $600 upgrading my NAV to the BMW MK4 unit. If he has any of this stuff he should think about selling some of it, he could easily make a $1k used. Or if he doesn't want it see if you can have it hahah.

Re: 04 BMW X5 and aftermarket HU
it might be easier to just use aftermarket amp for the speakers, i have an 02 x5 and when i got it it already had an aftermarket head unit and amp and speakers, the speaker wires from the oem amp in the trunk needed to be cut/tapped into for the wires coming off the new amp,
one thing is for sure with the vehicl though, its a major PITA to run aftermarket speaker wires into the doors
running an aftermarket amp is really quote simple in bmw's as well since the battery is in the trunk just need rca's and a remote turn on wire rand up to the head unit

Re: 04 BMW X5 and aftermarket HU
Did you ever figure out how to power up the stock amp?
I too am trying to hook up my Carputer but I can't get the stock amp to turn on. The aftermarket harness adapter has a amp-on wire but putting 12 volts to does nothing.
Help please!
