Quickie Dyno Comparison - Skunk2 Alpha vs. Toda Fakie

Been creepin around H-T lately...looks like the AM forum has definitely taken a dive.

RedLine is Toda Rep
BlueLine is Skunk2 Alpha
Tested on the same day minutes apart. No matter where we moved vtec or played with a/f and timing we couldnt get rid of the midrange lumpiness. I'll go ahead and assume its due to the cyl. pairing. Either way it rocked out on the very top end. The quality is real nice and it fits really well.
Engine combo is an 85X89 @ 13ish:1 compression.
Portflow PR3 Head on Pro3's and a modified PerformerX.

Nice!!

Was the retuned after the Skunk2 install?

:o what a miracle from the big PR machine again... ~10 years and only 5hp on the top, plus more bumpy curve (plus worse ground clearance) on a 2l vs a replica
THANKS

Re: Quickie Dyno Comparison - Skunk2 Alpha vs. Toda Fakie

I personally think that anything off the shelf that can make power over an already stout combo is a good start. If i toyed around with cam gears and massaged the crossover a bit more i guarantee i can get rid of that dip. I've had similar things happen with other headers and i was able to work most of it out.

The only thing is that my main test subject is a stock ITR which i'll have results coming soon on...

We are testing

RMF narrow rep
Hytech small tube rep
SMSP rep
Toda Rep
Skunk alpha

The ground clearance really isnt all that bad at all on the Skunk, its got more ground clearance than a jdm 4-1 ITR header.

Replica vs. "Replica", looks good to me! Thanks again Mikey.

I wouldn't call this coming from a big PR machine. Mikey doesn't have a dog in the fight, you know that.

The Toda has better clearance than the Alpha?

Wow I'm impressed! It was close with the Toda all the way up to the top end where it took over. A bit lumpy with the Alpha compared to the Toda but still impressive.

I'm pretty sure he was refering to Skunk2 and their header.

I just picked up an alpha header so I was crossing my fingers it would do well before I clicked on the thread. Also going on a stockish R.

Re: Quickie Dyno Comparison - Skunk2 Alpha vs. Toda Fakie

Looks like a winner from what I can tell. Sure it's going against a replica Toda but it's still a strong design and for an 'original' header from a major manufacturer that costs $400, it's hard to complain. It's nice to have the option of buying a solid inexpensive header that's not a knockoff.

Thanks for the test, and looking further to the rest.

I realize to what he was referring...I was just under the impression he was implying that Mikey was testing FOR Skunk2.

Another good comparison

Deff should test against the rmf narrow/rep ASAP.

RMF narrow rep
Hytech small tube rep

Skunk alpha

Are these going to be tuned or just bolted on? It would be very interesting to see each header run on an identical base-map (like phearable) vs each header with a mild tune. It would be a really simple way to double your testing results too. ;)

I've got a stock 97 B18C R w/ a RMF narrow rep so I'm definitely pullin for that.

Jus got another hytech rep for the dd b16. curious to see if the numbers are goin to be identical/close to the other tri-y designed manifolds. especially since i'll be comin to you for a tune with a similar setup in a few months. except im considering the corn juice. *grabs popcorn and kicks feet up*

Good stuff Mikey
Definitely agree that anything that can extract even a little bit of power out of a setup that is nearly maxed out, is really a winner

Re: Quickie Dyno Comparison - Skunk2 Alpha vs. Toda Fakie

nice test it definitely answers one of the questions I had about these two headers. I'm trying to decide what to put on the CRX for the AMS class at IFO and was deciding between these two headers.

I wonder if the pairing of the Skunk2 helps it up top like that.

I have a toda rep, and I has a rmf narrow rep before it. I have not been to the dyno yet since I stwitched to the toda rep but mid range feels way better.
