so i know that u need to buy an OBD2 timing belt cover if u r running an OBD2 oil pump. today i was helping my friend pull his 94 LS motor outta his teg. he is dropping a built LS/VTEC motor into the car but he's gonna be using peices offa the stock LS motor we just pulled out. the LS/Vtec has a OBD2 GSR oil pump. i know the timing cover on the OBD1 LS motor wont bolt up to the OBD2 oil pump, but i was test fitting it to see why it wont fit: The bottom of the timing cover hits the oil pump. now can u just shave that part off the timing belt cover to make it fit? not too sure if thats the only problem with the fitment issue. if we do cut it and all the bolts line up, we'll use silicon on the part we cut out to make sure no debri gets into the timing belt

when i switched to a obd-2 pump the obd-1 cover fit badly and left the timing gear exposed, i didn't like it so i went ahead and bought one from slhondaprts.com i believe its only like 30 dollars.

hmm, well i'll see how it fits, if it sucks then i guess he'll have to buy a new one

Yup. On both ends of the bottom of the cover you will have a large gap where the timing belt and gear is clearly exposed to the elements.

I wouldn't recommend it if you were using it as your daily driver. Not that you can't, but the risk outweighs the price of an OBD2 Lower timing cover.

To use the OBD1 cover, there is a tab on the very bottom that you grind off to clear the casting on the OBD2 pump.

I ran a GSR oil pump on my b18a1 Block. My b18a1 timing cover seems to not fit right. What do I need a GSR timing belt cover?

The oil pump housing from an OBD-2 GSR pump has a wider base for the timing cover to fit over in order to house the crankshaft fluctuation sensor and bracket. The OBD-1 oil pump has no such provision, so the lower part of the cover need only cover the crank gear and timing belt, and thus, is much narrower. The LS and GSR/ITR lower timing covers are the same, so you simply need to poach one from a '96+ "B" series engine and you will be good. There really isn't an effective way to modify the early cover to fit the late model pump... not and protect the timing belt anyway.
