Icon6 Need help on B20b Main Stud

Ok, im starting to rebuild my b20 engine this coming new year. There are few question i need to ask, this things been in my head for few month and i still cant figure out on how to solve it.

1. Ive just unscrew all my main bolts, but 1 of the main threads on the block seems to stretch a bit. But i still can rotate the bolt with my hand. Does this problem always occur when removing the main caps?

2. Some of my main bolts-head been stripped. Can i use the ARP Main Stud instead. Ive read somewhere in the forum that when you use ARP Main you will need to line-hone the caps. Is there any other methods to use, like using a less thicker bearing.. or torque the bolts less than the ARP specs.

3. If i use the ARP 208-5404 Main studs, does it act the same like having a girdle.. reliability? Hoping to rev max 8.5k rpm.

Thanks for helping you guys..

If you use main studs there is no getting around having to align hone the mains and make sure they are all still "true". Adding a girdle isn't a bad idea either if you plan to build the motor and turn some R's, studs won't do what a girdle does.
Are you saying you can't get the bolt out or did it pull the thread? You may need to get it re-tapped, or if its too bad they make a product called "time-serts" that act as almost a hela-coil. Take some pics if you can to explain this better.

All the bolts have been removed. There's a slight problem to put em back. One of the main threads seems a bit hard to rotate by hand like the other does. But when i lift up the bolt, everything seems fine (thread in a good shape). Do i need to chase the thread?. If i just leave it like that, would it harm my thread when reaching the final torque.

More than likely it is full of gunk or something. I would chase all of them and clean them out with brake cleaner. As long as the threads are fine and not cross-threading when you put them in an apply final TQ I wouldn't worry about it. Main studs are a waste IMO.

^^...what he said...what u need to do is find and old headbolt and use a dremel to cut 2 slits from top to bottom of the threads and that will clean the threads and all the gunk will stay in the slits.....u will also need to do this to ur head bolts threads.....after u clean them you will notice they will go in easier....

depending on what ur doing...drag racing,street....dont need a girdle...for road racing where your rpms are gonna be in the 7k+ range for long periods of time then get a girdle and arp studs and an alignhone...

dont waste ur money..use a dremel with a carbonfiber cutting wheel...takes 2 seconds...n u have the right size...if im not mistaken the headbolts n main bolts use the same thread pitch so an old head bolt can be use.....also this is done by hand no wrenches...

Bring back my post... its seems that the 2 of the bolts just pull bits out of my thread..but still, i can torque them down to specs... will this be ok?...or do i need to get a new block... seems i can get the block pretty cheap around here.. but i dont like to waste.... after all honing and decking been done...
